We spent a few hours here on a fall day in October. There are a number of sites to picnic by the water. We also visited Mushroom Rocks and did some hiking in the Horsethief Canyon area. There were small caves to explore and rocks to climb. The children enjoyed the outing and we will return in the summer when swimming would be an option.

We went swimming and to play in the "sand". The water was warm and didn't really cool us off.....we are from the North where lakes are ice cold. Well maintained. Fee to enter park.

It is an average place to camp and fish. Nothing fancy or out of the ordinary and the cost is pretty reasonable if you want electricity. It could use some sprucing up and modernizing.

This lake is fairly typical of the Kansas Lakes. Some are slightly better than others in certain categories. I would say that this lake has the upper hand in locations to fish from shore if you do not have a boat. Also, there are many spots to pitch a tent that give you the feeling of being off the beaten path. All in all if you enjoy the lakes of Kansas you will probably enjoy this one too.

A better clean up crew would be a huge improvement but over all a beautiful place to visit.Nice trails to explore with the family or friends. A nice place for a day or weekend trip.

If you love getting off the beaten path, try Kanopolis State Park. You'll find that Kansas is NOT flat or boring. Red sandy trails meander the base of sandstone outcrops, pedestals and mini caves climbing shallow canyons and crossing clear streams. We saw wild turkey, mule deer, collared lizards, bull frogs, meadow larks, baltimore oriole, heron and pelicans. Refrain from summer-time visits when trails are overgrown and the heat is intense. Spring and fall are the best -- and you might have the place all to yourself! We rented the Redwood group camp in Venango and were delighted. You can also rent horses (by reservation) or visit Mushroom Rock, or Coronado Heights near Lindsborg.

My son and I stopped to camp at Lake Kanopolis in early July 2013. Climbing the bluffs and walking some of the lake shore was a memorable experience.. A quiet and peaceful place. The wildlife keep their distance, but are abundant. I had done some horseriding here many years ago. Looking forward to doing that again.

We were traveling from Arizona to Missouri and stopped for a night at Kanopolis Lake. It was a week night and there were only about 10 people camping in the whole campground so it was nice and quiet. A cool breeze off the lake and beautiful roads to ride our bikes on. Lots of wildlife to see and a very relaxing stop for us after a long day driving. We saw deer, waterbirds of all kinds, and a flock of wild turkeys walked right through our camp. The showers were slightly primitive but certainly usable.

Nice state park in the open plains. Has a horse trail and special campsite for those bringing in their own horses. Disappointed to see KDWP basically shut down the west shore to camping but overall not to bad for a small park. State and federal areas available and frequently see officers on patrol at this lake.

If you love to trail ride & camp with your horses, this is the place for you. The Rockin K camp ground is excellent for camping with your horse. The trails are just enough of a challenge to enjoy, yet gentle enough for the novice rider. Highly recommend this park!
