Received quite a history lesson on who Sam Bell Maxey was and what he did for Texas. Additionally, we toured his home and saw what a Halloween would have been like in the late 1800's.

I would actually give this a rating of 3.5 but TA doesn't do halves, so I'll tip it to a full 4 thanks to the knowledgeable and enjoyable tour guide. She seemed to really love this house and it's history and gave lots of tidbits that I found interesting. My 13 and 9 year old boys even enjoyed it. It is not a large house, and takes about 40-45 mins to get the tour. I enjoy historical sites. If you do not, this may be boring to you. The city of Paris is very sleepy on a Sunday, and although this house was open (we caught the last tour at 3pm) not much else is. I would recommend coming on a Saturday instead.

One hour tour with a knowledgable tour guide. The depth of original pieces in this house is really unbelievable. My wife and I stopped in on a one day trip to Paris Tx. Learned alot about the area and history of the house. Any history buff would be well served making the stop in here.

The 1868 Sam Bell Maxey House is a great stop in Paris for local and Civil War history buffs. General Maxey is an interesting historical figure and his family owned the home for three generations. I especially enjoyed the period furniture and the stories of the family members who lived there. My tour guide was very informative and friendly and I spent nearly an hour in the home and walking around the grounds.

Very knowledgeable tour guide and the house was full of authentic pieces from the actual maxey family.

Original furnishings and fascinating history. They have over 600 letters from the family which gives great insight into the history of the home. Superb 1 hour tour! A do not miss!

My husband and enjoyed our tour of the 1886 Sam Bell Maxey House. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable. She took the perfect amount of time explaining history of the home, contents and people who lived there. We were allowed to take pictures without a flash. The price is $4 for adults.

We had a private tour as no one else was there. this was a really great example of turn of the century living. I was excited to know that everything was actually used by the family not just an example of what it could have been.

The home's architecture is beautiful, and the history of the Confederate rebel turned Congressman's home is worth hearing and touring. One reason to visit: the home has its original furniture. You're not only seeing furnishings from the ninetheenth century, you're seeing what was chosen for those very rooms and the different styles of two generations that lived there. If you're interested in home renovation or historic preservation, this home is also an interesting case study. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable, though I would have liked more of a printed summary or booklet about the home and the family's history in case I forget it all. Note: in May 2013, at least, tours begin on the hour (10:00am, 11:00am, etc), and you can only see the home on the tour. The good news, is that they didn't require a minumum number of people for the 40 minute tour and we were able to stroll leisurely and ask questions as we walked. Visiting here is a pleasant way to spend an hour or so if you happen to be in town, and driving around the elegant neighborhood afterwards is nice, too.
