Great views from the top on a clear day. Bit of a climb to get there, but ok for the reasonably fit.

We have the joy of owning a property near here and have often been up to the Beacon with family, friends and dogs. It is a beautiful spot with panoramic views. It can be a bit windy being as open to the moor as it is, but a viewing platform well worth a visit. The surrounding area is breathtaking.

Great 360* views when you reach the beacon. lovely.3G works up there too, so you can send pictures from the spot! bonus for techy people.

On a crystal clear night it is just the best time to watch the stars in the sky. Well worth the stroll to the top.

I love Somerset and especially Dunkery Beacon, fantastic views, wonderful open spaces, lovely for a picnic, an amazing place all round. Somerset is a county that people tend to pass by on the way to other places which is a shame because its so beautiful.

We visited this "landmark" only by chance after driving out to Exmoor at the behest of our university aged daughter & boyfriend.Getting there was the usual trip along the A roads from the M5 until we "entered" the park at Dunster (A39 & A396) and just drove along to Wheddon Cross where we decided it was time to figure out where the "park" actually was. Turns out that Exmoor is really just a boundary line put up around a regular bit of countryside with all it's towns, roads, farms, residents, etc. contained inside and not like most national parks in Canada or the US. A local map indicated Dunkery Beacon was close by so we said, "why not?"A drive up to the rather tiny car park area was a test of nerves as most the road beyond the B3224 out of Wheddon was single lane. Lucky for us we met no opposing traffic and right after we parked, a rather big lorry went down the other way.Once there, the kids hiked the path up to the Beacon monument and we old'uns chose to ramble up a more sedate trail. Still, we covered about a mile or more where we enjoyed a lovely view of the countryside below. The kids reported that the monument and views across the Bristol Channel were amazing.Afterwards we made it back to Wheddon and enjoyed a drink in the Rest and Be Thankful Inn (after that hike & drive, it was SO appropriate...) which is located right next to a public rest area with washrooms and local tourist info. Pretty amazing for such a small village. If you are really into hiking or rambling, a trip to Exmoor / Dunkery is not a bad idea at all, but only if you are already in the Southwest otherwise it makes a very long day of driving. However, it still deserves a Recommended if on your bucket list.

Wonderful wide open views....stunning...just stunning. Views across open moorland....no people, cars or noise (except the bees on the heather). Saw plenty of red deer too

Dunkery beacon, highest point on Exmoor and with breath taking views to Dartmoor, Wales and the south coast, a truly amazing place. The colours of the landscape were fantastic.

We left at 7am and walked from Burrowhayes farm up through the woods to Dunkery Beacon with the help of a local map. The woodland is peaceful and tranquil, and the open moorland at the top offers stunning panoramic views. We saw a herd of deer, and not a single person - perfect.

Do the walk to the top - take your time - no need to rush. Take it slowly and keep your eyes open for the Red Deer and Exmoor Ponies. If your quiet and patient you'll see them. The view from the top on a fine day is spectacular.
