Carrowmore, the ancient graves that date back further than Newgrange, are close to Knocknarea, and should not be missed. When I was there they had a really good guide to explain the site. In fact, you can look up into the surrounding hills to the cairns. (The guide pointed them out to us.) Yeats often spent time taking walks there and musing (my article: http://www.emilieharting.com/articles/Yeats.pdf has info on Sligo and Carrowmore)

There was good free parking at the sight. The hike up to the cairn was at times steep and I found it a bit hard going at times - but then I was overtaken by children running up all the stairs. Once at the top, the views were well worth the effort.

Nice walk and great views at the top. Just what we needed after a night of over indulgence in the Sligo pubs.

Very much worth any effort to get to the top. I'm pretty fit so found the hike easy but I understand why others comment on the steepness. Worth going to Carrowmore first to get an understanding of the burial tomb at the summit.

When we got out of the car in the car park we had to wait until the sheep had been herded down the lane before we could start our walk - a truly Irish traffic jam! The walk up to the summit isn't too difficult as long as you are careful once the path stops. The cairn at the top is much bigger than I thought it would be. I had been told to walk across the summit to appreciate the views instead of going straight back down. We went toward the sea and looked down at Strandhill and went in the other direction to look down on Sligo city. It's unbelievable how quickly the mountain can be engulfed in clouds - we climbed up in sunshine but could see clouds moving in and by the time we got to the car park we could no longer see the mountain!
