maybe we've seen too many churches and this is a nice one, but nothing too special, worth entering and seeing for 10 min

France is full of them and each has its own character from the great cathedrals to the more intimate basilica's and St Sauveur is no exception.

It was interesting to see around this magnificent building and see where Bertrand de Guicelns (spelling) heart had been buried (strangely enough we had been watching a programme in Britain about how he united France during 100 years war and so it was quite a coincidence to see his statue in Dinan and memorial in the church.

Slighty tucked away at the end of a square off the amin shopping areas in the old town. A spectacular church inside and out. Carving around the main door should not be missing and the interior is stunning. A detour is recommended.

This is an OLD church! A young knight, Rivallon le Roux of Dinan, made a promise to build a church if he returned safely from the Crusades. Work on the building of St. Sauveur began in 1120 A.D. Persian and Byzantine influence is evident in the decoratiion. The church was used to store hay after the French Revilution and returned to being a church in 1800. The granite carvings have survived for over 800 years; look for the lion, the bull and the camel. The stained glass windows cast a lovely light in this quiet place. Be sure to take a walk around the church and look at the fantastic gargoyles on the spire.Behind the church is a lovely Engligh garden, and a section of the ramparts. Great view of the River Rance and the harbour below.

Those who are religious and those who embrace the spiritual nature of life will find the Basilique St. Sauveur a space to take a few moments or an hour for reflection... It is like all churches and cathedrals a remarkable place to pause and ask 'what matters in your life in light of eternity; what will your legacy be hundreds of years from now'....

Situated in Place St Sauveur, which is one of the prettiest little squares in town. This beautiful Basilica is well worth a visit. Simply stunning stained glass windows and beautiful architecture. At night it has fabulous atmospheric flood lighting, great photo opportunity! If you are in Dinan on a Sunday you will hear the bells, ding donging from 7am.....loudly! Pick up croissants and pastries, take to L'Absinthe in the square, sit relax and people watch!!

This was just part of our tour of Dinan. The church was full of history and had a beautiful stained glass window. The medieval city of Dinan had the most amazing buildings and houses dating back to 15/16 centuries. I was enthralled by the history. I would strongly suggest that a visit to this historic village.
