This is 114km or a two hour drive from Geneva and makes great day trip. It was quite stunning with the towering limestone cliffs and a pretty river winding its way through the village. I brought my own lunch but there were a few restaurants around which looked nice and as it was a sunny day there were people sitting outside to eat. I am planning to go back here again one day soon to explore some of the hiking paths that surround the village.

Situated in a reculee ('blind' valley with no exit) this ancient village, with its abbey and impressive buildings, is overlooked by towering valley cliffs of the gorge.The few tourist sites were mostly closed when we visited, as were the shops & cafes. Perhaps the owners are tired of gawping visitors? It is viewed as one of the prettiest villages in the area but it was asleep for us and not at its liveliest or best.

As an Australian visitor I found this to be a wonderful place to see...not really the most child friendly as we had a 3 year old as well as 9 and 12 but still a great place to visit....spent 2 or 3 hours exploring but could easily have spent a day or 2.

Baume les Messieurs is one of the most beautifull villages of France. It is situated in a dead-end valley. At the end of the valley there is a beautiful 'horsetail' waterfall and there are caves you can visit (fee). The whole valley, including the village and the abbey is simply breathtaking! Looks like a scene in Lord of the rings!

C'est en ce moment qu'il faut y aller. La cascade est magnifique et l'eau ruisselle de toute part, y compris à travers la paroie rocheuse. A se demander si cela ne va pas éclater un jour, tellement on sens qu'il y a de pression derrière cette roche qui semble si fragile. Loin de l'agitation qui règne en mettre en pleine saison, le doux soleil de ce début de printemps ne rends la balade que plus agréable.Seul bémol, c'est de voir les grottes fermées (en même temps, il semblerait que ce soit dangereux, vu la quantité d'eau qu'il y a en ce moment). Ce sera l'occasion de revenir une fois de plus.

Panorama splendide ! Une hauteur à couper le souffle. Village très petit. Abbaye fermée. Très belles maisons en pierre. A faire mais peut être aux beaux jours...

L'endroit est vraiment magique, différent de ce qu'on peut voir ailleurs, il vaut le détour. Logez et mangez au Grand Jardin, faites une ballade jusqu'aux cascades et visitez l'abbaye (prenez la visite guidée.)
