Picture this. Three green valleys, hemmed in and then blocked off by gleaming vertiginous cliffs, meet at two 'dead-ends'. This extraordinary place is home to its ancient abbey. A stroll reveals a lot from within its cloisters. We were blown away by the contrast of the awesome scenery and the modest village, where time has given a gentle curve to its roofs and leaning stone walls which are cosetted by hollyhocks and creepers. the houses annexed to the abbey have narrow gardens bordered by low unmortared walls. Ahhhh..... there's more than a whiff of nostalgia hanging about the town which seems to be fond of its past, considering the abbey has watched over the village since the 9th-century. While engaging an 80-year old 'history-buff' about the nooks and crannies of town, he maintained that Edith Piaf's song Les Trois Cloches (The Three bells) was composed by a local hero, Jean Villard. Who are we to argue with this delightful gent? We loved the preferred means of transport here, a horse-drawn carriage and mountain bikes, making it easy to enjoy this authentic little town of outstanding beauty. Don't miss the view over overlooking the village from the Cirque de baume, a two km- long, shaded circuit which encompasses waterfalls, including the Monumental Cascades des Tufs, whose silvery waters and rocks covered in green moss can be observed from above, offering glorious views into the gully and beyond, to the entire Jura. A popular attraction are the caves reached by a footbridge and arched corridor 90 m long, where we were greeted by five chambers carved by water out of rock. The vault, 80 m above our heads provides excellent echo opportunities and superb acoustics. While here stop for a bite to snack on from the lovely eatery at the waterfalls.

The drive to the village of Baume les Messieurs takes you through lovely countryside. Baume itself is set in a rocky ravine, which originally offered protection to the Abbey. It is an area popular with walkers and there are many signposted paths. The Abbey is worth a visit, and when we were there, there was an exhibition of artisanal crafts where the pottery was particularly good and was reasonably priced. There are grottos to visit as well.

Evidemment, aller à la reculée sans s'arrêter à l'abbaye serait un crime. Lieu incontournable pour les amoureux de vieilles pierres et de lieu chargé d'histoire.Petite astuce pour les non initiés, je vous recommande de ne pas oublier d'aller jusqu'au fond de la dernière cours et de prendre le temps de s'arrêter devant l'ouverture de la rivière souterraine qui passe là, vous y découvrirer une Pieta surprenante en de tel lieu.Juste une critique à emmettre, il manque un peu d'explication en ce qui concerne le retable (avec un éclairage plus adapté aussi) et le lapidaire situé à gauche du choeur. A revoir pour les amateurs d'histoire non initié à celle de la région.

Cette abbaye est singulière, chargée d'histoire, le lieu est hallucinant, on passe de l'art roman au gothique...Des fouilles y ont lieu, à revoir impérativement !

Si vous passez par Baume, profitez-en pour visiter cette abbaye mais prenez la visite guidée, vous en apprendrez beaucoup plus qu'en la visitant seul.

Le calme, l'ambiance, la géologie alentour, les lieux chargés d'histoire, un endroit ou le temps a eu la bonne idée de se suspendre.

Site superbe mais très abîmé car très visité et ancien. Zone chargée d'histoire, impressionnant. Les résidents du site font le nécessaire pour restaurer le site ; à voir pour le plaisir des yeux et aussi pour donner un petit coup de poche ...

Visite intéressante et gratuite mais à faire dans le cadre d’une balade complète, (cascades, grottes, belvédère, etc) car peu de chose à voir. Mais on y trouve un grand calme et une grande sérénité. Très plaisant quand il y a peu de monde.

Il convient d'aller voir ce très beau village installé au bout d'une reculée. Les maisons sont préservées et au milieu, les reste d'une abbaye qui en plus est encore vivante. Un bien beau détour.
