I can recommend the Old Town of Ferrara. The Renaissance is there on life in this buildings. This Wall is a good Thing to see with some informations about it. When you are in Northern Italy, then you must visit Ferrara.

A good way to explore the city: riding a bike on or along the walls it's under 15 km and it's only interrupted in a couple of places near the rail station.

It's not completley intact, and at parts you need to use the walkways going aroung it, instead of upon it. It's where half the city do their evening power walk or run. It's great to join them.

We cycled. You can hire bikes at many outlets in the city. The width and surface on the top of the walls varies but basically it's wide and smooth. Some of the paths are outside but alongside the walls and these are narrower and can be busy. There are very few sections where you have to peddle uphill and these only occur when you go up and over road crossings. Otherwise it's flat and a very easy ride. But be warned! Keep your map handy because there are some gaps where it's very easy to lose your way. A great way to experience another of the many attractions of this historic gem of a city!

It's a very long walk if you choose to do all of it. Just a section of the wall walk will suffice to give you an idea, considering that from the wall yiu'll see very little of them, as you are on them, and very little of the city. Still a very nice walk for a sunny and hot summer day

get a bike and ride the length of them both on top amidst the treees and below to appreciate the structure

We were staying in Bologna and debated between taking train to Lucca or Ferrara to bicycle. We have been to Lucca in the past and loved it. We were told, and had read, that Ferrara was pretty much the same so we chose to train to Ferrara since it was closer. We had a fine time in Ferrara and would have thought it was even grander if we had not been to Lucca and could compare. The wall in Ferrara no way compares to Lucca's. The wall in Ferrara is not continuous, is narrower, and not good for biking in many places. Views from the wall in Lucca are nicer. And, biking the streets of Lucca is much more enjoyable. The drivers in Ferrara were down right inconsiderate and dangerous at times. Once we found a good safe biking area and neighborhood, we had a good time, but it took awhile to scout it out. It was very easy to reach by train from Bologna.

We took complimentary bicycles from the hotel and explored several lovely streets and the travelled along the bicycle path around part of the walls and partly used the path on the top of the walls. Everyone (young and old) seems to cycle in Ferrara and this trip enabled us to enjoy peacefully the wonderful green spaces and trees that exist around the walls. One has to carefully navigate a few parts where the walls haven't survived but this proved to be a pleasant challenge
