Pretty, old, gathering. Nice ancient statues with a manticore at the fountain. Quite creepy, entertaining and educational.

This is an typical medieval Italian Piazza. Of course it is great and beautiful, but I cannot rate this more than average simply because the average is, well, set so high in Italy :)But....walk thourgh the Piazza, under the Palazzo della Ragione, and then you will find something really extraordinary...the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore.

There were four of us at one table (we were with friends) and the others orders were filled and for unexplained reasons I never received my meal. A warm atmosphere. Very busy.

NO matter where you stand or which way you face, Piazza Vecchia is beautiful. Tucked away in the old city of Bergamo it is such an impressive display of architecture and historical styles. This is the highlight of Bergamo and should be explored day and night to enjoy all it has to offer. It is a photographer's heaven! Enjoy!

Piazza Vecchia is a beautifully preserved medival square in the heart of the upper town of Bergamo that makes you stop dead in your tracks and gaze around .During the Middle Ages it was the center of Bergamo's political scene -Palazzo della Ragione (with a lion on his facade, symbol of the Venetian domination). In the middle of the square there is the Contarini fountain, a symbol of Bergamo. We went first during the evening and was there at 22:00 to lsten to the 100 rings of the bell - symbolic of a by-gone time when the bell sounded a curfew telling residents to return before the city gates were locked. The beautiful architecture was lit and although buildings could not be accessed it was qiuiet and atmospheric. The second time we visited was during the day when we could visit the Cathedral, Camponone tower and other buildings which was a must do. The funiculars run late but the walk down to Citta Basa is a lot easier than the walking up

We were actually here in September 2013. We walked from the new town up winding roads to the old town and found our way to this paizza. There is a choice of places to eat here and we chose Trattoria Sant'Ambroeus which was excellent food. Just nearby is the Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore which is a must see. It is closed during some hours so we took the funicular up to the top of the hill and when we returned the church was open for viewing. So glad we saw this as it is absolutely stunning - the most ornate church we saw during our trip around Italy.

Nice combination of new and old, nice restaurants, old buildings and full of people. It is enjoyable to sit in one of the tables circling the square and watch people hurrying to different places. we managed to see one "bronze statue" artist and one just married couple!
