I saw here the opera Tosca, and it was great! I liked everithing - this place, the atmosphere, actors, the opera itself. I can recomended it for a visit :)

The opera season in Macerata at the Sferesterio is not to be missed. In a beautiful open air setting with the most enormous stage I have ever seen, the productions are always a feast for the senses. The acoustics are excellent and the whole evening a real joy. Seats can be pricey. If booking a box be sure to get seats in the front row, not behind, as these can have very restricted viewing.

The whole reason to go to Macerata is the opera festival at the Sferisterio. It's a great venue, outdoors with a great acoustic. I'd suggest a box if you want to see everything rather than a stalls seat. If you are opera crazy this won't be the best production you've ever seen - Aida was being filmed for Sky Arts and we felt it was aimed at the TV audience rather than those in the stadium. However it is a fantastic experience and not to be missed if you are in La Marche at the time.Top tip - take your insect repellent, we got majorly bitten while watching the performance.

This was built as a sports stadium but now makes an excellent outdoor venue for the Macerata opera festival.

Our third experience of the Sferisterio Opera festival. If you are in the Macerata area at the time it is not to be missed! The whole city is abuzz with opera goers in their finery, the restaurants and bars are packed before the performance which starts about (!)9. The auditorium is stunning, it is an amazing thing to see the moon disappear behind the great wall and see the stars appearing as the night gets darker. The luxury of sitting out until midnight on a warm night enjoying an evening of Italian Opera is not to be underestimated for northern Europeans! The music of Aida was not as much to my taste as the lush tunes of as Tosca and Madam Butterfly in previous years, but every production is interesting/innovative in its staging and the whole experience of a night at the Opera Sferisterio style is great fun for people watching, whatever the programme happens to be. The tickets are also far more reasonable than you would expect. A highlight of the Marche summer -recommended.

My first experience of live opera and it was wonderful. Aida. Tear prickly eyes at the end. The building is incredible and the atmosphere is unique.

Wonderful setting for my first Italian opera - be aware not all operas here are of equal standard - worth checking to avoid disappointment. La Travita was an excellent production - a late start 11.30pm due to a spectacular storm did create a late finish 2.20am but none the less a wonderful experience.

The season at the Sferisterio is short mid/late July to early August, and if you are within travelling distance during this time and like Opera it is absolutely worth it. We had a box for a small group of four, and saw Verdi's Nabucco. An excellent production in a stunning venue with good acoustics. . We thought the boxes were probably a better bet than the stalls areas as unlike in conventional theatres they all face the stage - the auditorium being more or less rectangular. We took some prosecco and nibbles to enjoy during the interval.

The stting is magical and the new director who has just been signed up for 3 more years is doing a fantatsic job. The money was spent where it matters, on the music but the sets were imaginative , innovative and interesting. In addition to the performances at the Sferisterio there were lots of other activities during the season in varios parts of Macerata, many of them free. If you book in person at the ticket office rather than online there are discounts for pensioners (ID required)

As a building, the sferisterio's certainly interesting (from a socio-historical point of view), but only a specialist would think it worth coming to Macerata just for that. Otherwise, the sferisterio is important for the Macerata summer opera season. This is where it all happens...The opera season is THE major event in Macerata. People there who're interested in Opera talk about it all the time in summer - what performance is or isn't worth going to this year, how it's not as good as it used to be, whether the Swiss would manage it all better, etc... The performances being in the open air, there's a risk of rain. Be aware that ticket-holders are only entitled to a refund if the whole performance is called off, and if the organisers manage to put on only five minutes, you get nothing back. Bonnie Prince Charlie once stayed in the Palazzo Compagnoni Marefoschi, a few hundred yards away. You can see the chapel where he and his wife renewed their wedding vows. In the season there are special opera-trains (Treni per la Lirica) that'll get you to Macerata in time for the performance and take you back afterwards. The organisers or the tourist office should have details.
