Very good value for money (free entrance) and a small guide in our own language (Dutch) which was nice for the children. The old toilet, the loopholes, ....

This is such a delightful castle to tour.... There are some great rooms to see... and you do have to find the old castle toilet! That is pretty amazing!!!! This castle has some interesting furnishings as you wander through the many rooms.... And if you want a snack, there is a restaurant right in the castle!

After we visited the Felsenkirche we continued our walk to the top and had a beer (Kirner) at the Schloss. You can also visit this by car!

After visiting the Felsenkirche its a 15-20 minutes walk to the Schloss. On top you will find a great view and you can take a seat to have a cold one. Nice panorama view and friendly restaurant staff.

another hill with another view. Rheinland Pfalz is full of them. Schloss Oberstein was a great (Difficult, but short and sceneric) hike. In around 15 minutes or less you can reach Schloss Oberstein from the main town centre. There is no cost, you're free to stroll in and out.Whilst the viewpoint is extremely high, the surrounding area is mainly dippy hills lined with houses. Which provides a nice tranquil atmosphere, but I couldnt help but feel like i'd rather overlook the big hill i was standing on (with its castles, church-in-a-crevice & ruins) than overlook everything else from that position. If that makes sense. Maybe i'll climb the hill opposite.I like hills.

We decided to take the .8km hike from Felsenkirche to reach the top of the mountain to see the castle and it was definitely worth the hike. Our 3 and 5 year olds navigated the hike easily and even had plenty of energy at the top to run around and explore. An added bonus for those with kids were the hundreds of slugs and snails to be seen along the way....our kids were so excited! There were a few stairs so not sure strollers would work on the hike, but like I said, our barely 3 and 5 year old rocked the hike! At the top you are rewarded with a stunning view of the town below, it is one of the prettier views I've seen from this kind of site. Unfortunately for us, the castle was closed when we got there, but we enjoyed seeing the outside and taking in the view. I would absolutely recommend taking the hike up!

Every time I go to Germany I go to Idar-Oberstein. My family lives close to there so it's also convenient. My favorite site however is the church in the rocks below the castle. Plus I love the shops in the market place below. So much history here.

This is an amazing feat of engineering, today was my fourth trip here and I always enjoy it. It is a beautiful church, and the walks up to and around it are spectacular. Then there's the shops with crystals and Jewelry, and rocks of all kinds. look close there's several prices each shop is unique and has different prices. The town as a whole are very friendly. It can be a very romantic setting for anytime. great food choices and some nice but limited accommodations. No Handicap facilities available. There is no road to drive to the Church you must climb stairs
