Interesting story of the castle is that it was divided between the archbishoprics of Koblenz and Trier. After visiting the symbol of the unified church (the holy robe in Trier) - nice counterpoint with the two archbishops not being able to share a castle.

This is one of the few more complete fortresses that you can see from the train along the Moselle River. I'd definitely recommend a visit, because it's really worth seeing, even though you have to pay an entry fee (only 2.50 for students) which then lets you into the courtyards, a couple of rooms, and a tower. The castle can be reached by car, but you can also catch the train to the small town of Löf, then cross the bridge and enjoy the gorgeous walk up to the fortress (roughly an hour if you take your time).

Great place for a quick stop and reasonably priced.1 of the less busy castles along the Mosel or Rhine. Great views of the Mosel. Different in that there are no tours; you are given a pamphlet of info and allowed to walk around on your own.

We stopped in Alken, a little way up the flooding Mosel from Cochem, because the next day, last Sunday in May, was Happy Sunday Mosel Day and they shur down one of the roads along the Mosel. Also went to check on old St Michels church where last visit 25 years ago had plague victims interred under the church steps. Tried the 2 hotels in town. Nighttime temp dropped to 5C. Hotel Anker was cold, rude and surly. Landhuis-Muller was warm, friendly and had an awesome breakfast. St Michel's has changed, worth a short visit.

excellent find this castle was tucked away on the hillside looking down into town. What was great was all the torure devices they ahd on display.

A commanding view. Not very expensive. Lots of up and down on uneven surfaces make it a little treacherous for youth or seniors.

We really enjoyed this castle. In a lot of the castles we've seen in Germany, large parts of them are closed off to the public. The view of the Mosel River from the castle is nice and they hand out tour guides printed in English. The watch tower is also open, but may present a challenge to visitors who are perhaps not so agile because of what is basically an old ladder leading up to it. The view is nice, but I had to come down backwards to avoid having the floor for lunch. There was not a guided tour when we went and it wasn't crowded. We drove an hour from Spangdahlem to get there and it was worth the trip. There are also 3 other castles on the way to this one, so you could probably make a day of it if you're up and out early enough. There is a small cafe located inside the castle where you can grab a beer and a snack, but here's a warning: unless you find yourself in the middle of a Zombie Apocalypse, trapped in the castle, out of supplies and your last wish is to taste a "coffee-like-substance"--avoid the coffee. There are plenty of nice cafes on the Mosel on the way back. (If you ARE in the middle of the Zombie Apocalypse there are some excellent defensive shooting positions here.)

this one surprised me. it is even more beautiful once you cross the draw bridge. It was cool to see the torture tools they used(well sad but interesting)

I made a short stop in Alken for lunch and noticed the sign for Burg Thurant and my curiousity got the best of me and I had to up and visit as castles are always something I love to visit and I was only in Germany for one week. Being close to the end of October, there were only a few other people there. The view of the Mosel Valley itself is worth the short and winding drive up. It is breathtaking and the day that I went it was still a little bit foggy. I took some photos and some shots of the castles from the outside only. The price to get was very reasonable compared to other castles, but I decided not to go in, just driving up and exploring the outside and seeing the view was enough for me.
