You have to want to get to this great example of Byzantine architecture. It is not an easy place to find and it is on the end of a dirt road. Not the 'roughest' place to find by far, but still you need good shoes or hiking boots to climb around on these ruins. If you are looking for a place with a guide, marked monuments and safe passage - don't show up here! If you want to be blessed with magnificent views, fairly good ruins and the solitude of a lost location, this is the place. There are still some remaining frescoes in some of the buildings, and the ruins are interesting to climb around but beware of the edges of these cliffs. It is not a place for tour buses - a real plus - and few travelers. Chances are you will be here all by yourself. Go to the back of the ruins and look out over the canyons and cliffs toward the sea and the mainland. It is a scene you will not forget.

After a visit to the Sunday market of Potamos, we went to the abandoned village of Palaiochora for a walk and photo session amidst its ruins. You here nothing but the sound of a baby goat trying to find its way back to its mother. Pity that none of the churches are open for a visit, but the tree and benches at the entrance of the village make a great picnic spot.

Small warren of streets in the castle is so different from the imposing edifice looking out to the near-distant sea. Try and walk around it on the M1 hiking route to appreciate the walls

Auch eine zweite Wanderung von Trifyllianika nach Palaiochora macht Spaß. Im Herbst überraschen die unzähligen Cyclamen und Krokusse auf dem herrlichen Wanderweg und die Sonne ist in der Ruinenstadt nicht mehr so erbarmungslos. Und wieder beeindruckend die Schluchten rings um Palaiochora.

Καταπληκτική πεζοπορική διαδρομή ανάμεσα σε ερείπια κατοικιών και εκκλησιών, πάνω σε βράχο μοναδικής ομορφιάς. Φανταστική η αρχιτεκτονική του ναού της Αγίας Βαρβάρας. Αξίζει η επίσκεψη το απόγευμα λίγο πριν δύσει ο ήλιος. Μοναδικά τόσο το τοπίο όσο και η ιστορία του κάστρου!!!!

Η καστροπολιτεία της Παλαιόχωρας βρίσκεται στα βόρεια δυτικά του νησιού. Χτίστηκε τον 12ο αιώνα από Μονεμβασίτες και ήταν η πρωτεύουσα του νησιού που ονομαζόταν Άγιος Δημήτριος. Η τοποθεσία της περιβάλλεται από βαθύ και απόκρημνο φαράγγι κάνοντας την φυσικό οχυρό. Το 1537 καταστράφηκε από τον αιμοδιψή ναύαρχο του τουρκικού στόλου Χαϊρεντίν Μπαρμπαρόσα, ο οποίος έσφαξε πολλούς κατοίκους και κατέστρεψε την πολιτεία, η οποία από τότε δεν ξαναχτίστηκε.Σήμερα σώζονται αρκετά μνημεία, όπως ο ναός της Αγία Βαρβάρας άριστο δείγμα Μονεμβασιώτικης αρχιτεκτονικής φημισμένος για τις ιδανικές αναλογίες του, η εκκλησία της Παναγίας του φόρου. Επίσης υπάρχουν ένας μεγάλος αριθμός από κτίσματα, όπως δημόσια κτίρια, αμυντικά τείχη, που συνθέτουν ένα ανεπανάληπτο σκηνικό, μεταφέροντας τον επισκέπτη σε άλλες εποχές.

Εξαιρετικό δείγμα βυζαντινής πόλης - κάστρου δεν σώζονται πολλές στη χώρα μας. Εκκλησίες και οικήματα που σώζονται σε μεγάλο ύψος μας δίνουν την ατμόσφαιρα μιας βυζαντινής πόλης. Κρυμμένη από τη θάλασσα αλλά με θέα στη θάλασσα είναι ένας ακόμα σταθμός και συνέχεια των κάστρων που βρισκόταν στην Ανατολική πλευρά της Πελοποννήσου όπως το Κυπαρίσι, η Μονεμβάσια κλπ.
