To discover and experience a place like this is what travel is all about. Sremski Karlovci itself has an interesting Old Town, but clearly the highlight is this gem of a place. It is a bit of a walk away from the Center, but once you get there, ask for the owner from the legendary Zivanovic Family, and he will give you a personal tour that cannot be beaten. His English is very limited, so make sure you have some one with you who can interpret. His wealth of knowledge is just amazing. Combine the bee museum with wine tasting, and you will have a very enriching afternoon. End your trip in the shop, and load yourself with the wines you tasted, honey and propolis. The owner threw in a free bottle of propolis for me. I ended up spending 2 hours here. Don't miss it on the way to Novi Sad.

Interesting to hear about the "father of modern beekeeping". They have some uniques gifts such as little sculptures from beeswax.

We were really excited to visit this unique museum in Sremski Karlovci, a wine center for Serbia. We had planned on trying honey and wine and then buying the stuff we liked. Well, we never got a chance to taste a single thing. You have to take a tour in order to do that, which comes to about 4 euros. With that much money, you could buy several bottles of wine from some of the other local wineries...No thanks! Seems like the proprietors don't take kindly to being told that it's normal to sample things like wine, honey, cheese, whatever, before you buy it. We still bought a jar or honey, just to be nice, but we enjoyed our time going around to the other wineries in the area much more. Too bad they don't get the attention that Zivanovic gets. If you're in the area, and want to try some wines from really nice, GENEROUS folks, give this place a miss and head to Petrovic or Probus wineries.

This is a family run business with a tradition and taste you won't find elsewhere. These people are the nicest people you'll ever met and their old house converted into museum is full of historic items and exhibitions about bees, honey and wine making. Everything is clean and you can walk everywhere around, go down to the cellar, sit on the terrace, walk around the yard and of course try some of the fine wines and spirits they make here. A honey brandy, red or white Bermet and Merlot and Chardonnay are a must to try and to buy, prices are low and quality is high.

This winery is located in Sremski Karlovci, just outside of Belgrade, so yes you need to drive here. I drove up and it didn't really look open, I just wandered in and knocked on a door. One of the family then gave me a private tour of the bee museum which was an interesting first for me. We then visited the cellar which was awesomely old and cool looking. We then did a tasting which included Bermet wine. These wines were probably the best I had while in Serbia. A great visit, the best winery I visited while there.

The Zivanovic family have had a wine cellar here for 300 years. The recipe for Bermet wine is unique to Sremski Karlovci. It used to be drunk at the emperor's court in Vienna and was even served on the Titanic. This family had kept the original recipe.

The bee museum is amazing, even though the bee hives that used to be on site are no longer kept there but are now about 40km away. A good historical account of bee-keeping with plenty of artefacts in support. Just as interesting is the "lagum" where the exceptionally wonderful speciality Bermet wine is produced. A cellar goes "down" into the ground, but a lagum goes "in" to a rock or hill. The Zivanovic family are friendly hosts, and the daughter speaks good English. Wine can be tasted, and this never fails to get a sale - the Bermet is delicious, and makes an impressive (and much appreciated) gift to give to Serbian friends, who will admire your good taste.

Our guide, Gradamir, took us to the Museum of Beekeeping and Wine Cellar of the Zivanovic family. It was a fascinating experience. One of the brothers gave us a lovely tour of the bee museum and talked about the family's history in establishing "bee friendly" procedures from way back to his great grandfather's time. He also took us into the wine cellar and talked to us about the importance of dirt floors rather than cement and mold to establish just the right environment for the best tasting wines. We then participated in a honey and wine tasting that was a lovely experience. We have visited wineries in many, many countries (including our home state of California) and have not enjoyed an experience more than the one we had with the Zivanovic family in Sremski Karlovci. Just loved it! We also bought several bottles of their delicious wine. (Details: The museum is located near the Peace Chapel in Sremski Karlovci. The website is muzej_pcelarstva. Youtubes are all in Serbian, but our host was quite fluent in English.)
