The museum has chosen to illustrate the history of Iceland by the use of photographs of children through the ages. there is some interaction with a few historical objects and a thorough and interesting associated accompanying narrative, featuring contemporary source material and poetry. The sum of the parts leads to a lovely contemplative and thought provoking experience. Some of the photos resonate completely with aspects of childhood recognizable by us all, while others illustrate starkly incredible differences. Adults and children should enjoy. If you can't see the way in that is because you need to ask at the desk in the library upstairs! luckily when we visited this also allowed us to see a nice art exhibition. oh, and there are some stuffed birds....

After most of a day exploring Reykolt and the surrounding area, we decided to visit the Borgarnes Museum. We went upstairs to library to pay and then directed to the entrance. The curator or maybe Librarian :) introduced us to the museum and the concept of the photographs, the surprises behind the pictures and her own special passion for the exhibition. It was a very special museum' we loved the traditional Icelandic turf house compared to the 21st century bedroom. Very revealing. Of special mention is the amazing glass and mirror bird room - we left with a much better and unique view of Iceland.

This exhibition tells a story without words, just using pictures. Small boxes with childrens toys and other artifacts behind the pictures illustrate the messages. Touching, warm and different.True Icelandic !Regardless of your origin,you will take it in !The birdroom? Amazing ! The museum shows photographs of children over a 100 year period. It's very interesting and you can "open" some of the pictures to reveal hidden items such as toys or other interesting objects. I especially liked the comparison of the two children's room in the back of the exhibition.

This is a beautiful museum and well worth a visit. On the day we went there was a lovely young lady who gave us plenty of attention and spent lots of time explaining the exhibition. It was a pleasure listening to her and her passion for the history of the area was obvious. She made the trip extre special.

The museum - next to an exhibition of local birds - mainly shows photographs from the childrens' point of view. It's realla amazing to see how people have lived a century ago and how Icelana has developed since then. Behind some pictures, you will find everyday objects.An additional plus - the lady working there speaks German as she has spent some time in Salzburg, Austria. She was very attentive, helpful and telling us some extra stories! :-)

Really enjoyed seeing this exhibit of pictures and artifacts about children and how their roles have changed through the last 100 years. Funny stories and sad stories that will stay with you long after you have gone home. Well worth the time. They were extra nice and stayed open and extra 30 minutes so we could see it because our tour had gotten into town late.

We visited this small Museum late in August, 2013. It is a gem. It provides an excellent introduction to life in this part of Iceland during the past 100 years or so and is cleverly presented to be attractive and informative for adults or children. Designed by the museum curator and a stage-set designer, the attractive display of historical wall-photos (see photo) shows people and events that stimulate fascinating narratives by the curator. Many photos swing outwards to reveal physical artifacts relevant to the era and topic of the photo. Many of the photos are unique, donated by the estates of long-time residents of the area. You will come away from a narrated tour or a self-guided tour with a good sense of the people and their lives in these parts, then and now. A recent addition to the museum is a very attractive gallery of taxidermically prepared birds from the region (see photo), including migrating birds. Interesting graphics and sound presentations answer key questions about the habits and lives of these birds. This museum is worth a long visit to get a real sense of life in this part of Iceland that goes beyond the normal tourist exposure. It should rate high on the itinerary of independent travelers.

There are two exhibits in the museum (at least as I write these words), one is made up of pictures of Icelandic children (expect lots of cute) paired together with relevant artifacts. An english-written guide is available. The second part is a taxidermy room full of Icelandic birds (here too, expect the cute). The two exhibits merge very well and you can also walk inside a twenty-first century child room put next door to an early twenty century turf house. Interesting contrast. People oworking there are very nice too so I'd say, go there.
