I run a B&B next to the Marine Harvest facility, and this trail head is not a good one if you want to get all the way to the top of volcano Calbuco. We went to the top in the beginning of Jan and the weather was very good. The best trail head starts out in the Valle los Ulmos. This is a long but easy climb with no climbing gear needed. The best part of the hike is to visit the ice caves near the top. This is an active volcano so hot steam comes out of the ground melting the snow above it forming the unusual caves. Our hike took a total of 9 hours. Also the best time of year to go to the top (for the best photos) is Nov, Dec and early Jan. Most of the snow melts from the volcano by Feb.

We drove to the trail-head near a Marine Harvest facility, then hiked the trail first to the Refugio Calbuco, then onwards to the summit. This climb involves a short technical rock climb, so not a goal for an average hiking trip. The weather was not good and we were the only party on the mountain that day. However, we met a few parties along the lower trail, this hike may be good in its own right.

The last major eruption of Calbuco occurred in 1961 and caused great destruction and damage to its around due to the lava flows, toxic gases and ash that polluted the environment. Despite everything the Calbuco volcano is now a beautiful mountain suitable to be visited and is surrounded by many lakes, lagoons and forests of ancient Alerces under protection in Alerce Andino National Park and Llanquihue national reserve. It is a special place for mountain climbing, horseback riding, kayaking, birdwatching and to enjoy the flora and fauna.

We traveled on a bus on our way to the cruise boat. We saw a lot of the Calbuco and Osorio volcano on the road. I took some pictures and they were lovely in spite of the bad weather.

What an amazing sight this is surrounded by the large body of water. The peak even has snow on it in the middle of summer time. You can climb to the top with just a little hard work and the pictures of the scenery come out just perfect. This might be my favorite Volcano in the region!

Drove up the mountain and then walked a little, fabulous views, well worthwhile. You can see most of Lago Lllanquihue, perhaps the rest of the world?!

Remember it rains 260 days a year in this region. Even in the summer time it is likely that the volcano will be hidden behind clouds.If you are lucky and it is a clear day you will have a great view of the volcano from Puerto Varas.

Viramos crianças fazendo bonecos de neve, uau,que delicia. O dia estava muito claro e ensolarado, subimos até a segunda estação, alugamos roupas especiais e foi a decisão certa pq la em cima faz muito frio. O lugar tem um visual deslumbrante, de tirar o folego. É aconselhável ir com sapatos próprio para neve pq senão o pé congela mesmo. É o ponto alto da viagem pra Puerto Varas, subimos de carro até o pé do vulcão, no verão não tem problema nenhum pra fazer isto. A estrada é ótima, e não deixem de tomar um chocolate quente no Café que esta na Estação, muito bom,

O acesso fica ao vulcão é atraves do parque nacional Llanquihue, que fica no final de uma estrada de terra indo a Río Blanco. Subi a trilha até o mirador, que fica a 700 m e tem uma vista muito legal do vulcão. Vale muito a pena a trilha, já que também se ve a cascata do río Blanco. É um passeio muito bonito, mas também um pouco puxado (~ 7 km)
