We assumed we would be on a busy trail with other people like us, but we only saw one other tourist walking the trail the day we did it. It is hot, so make sure to carry your hat and water! It is a beautiful walk. Only wish we had more time to spend in Guane.

We walked by Camino Real twice, day after day. And each time we liked it more. This trip is very easy to go when you start in Barichara and go to Guane, becouse the path leads down. There are planty of buses from Guane to Barichara or San Gil. Walking Camino Real you can admire around amazing view of high mountains, landscapes, trees and other exotic plants and flowers. Camino Is a perfect place to watch and hear many diffrent kind of birds. This is the perfect way to be activ and to have the great relax in the same time.Don't miss it.

Beautiful 5.5 Km walk, downhill from barichara to Guane, about 1.5 hours, great views and easy to do. You may take a bus back from Guane or walk back uphill

The Camino Real hike was beautiful and fascinating given the rich history and the knowledge that you are on an ancient path. However given the heat, the ups and downs of the rocky path and the length of the hike I found it a bit challenging at times. Alex, our guide was so helpful and caring making sure my friend and I had enough water and sunscreen as well as giving me a hand when I needed it. He made this day an unforgettable one. He was very knowledgeable and we shared a lot. He is a very talented artist as well as a great guide and later in the day my friend and I got to see his work at his gallery and his workshop. It was a great cultural experience and we had a fantastic time . I highly recommend hiring Alex as your guide when you are in Barichara.

On my recent trip to Columbia, my friend and I traveled to the beautiful colonial town of Barichara, in the Santander Department of the country, high the central mountains of the Columbia. In addition to the beautifully preserved Spanish Colonial architecture and the pristine mountain views, we were attracted by a desire to hike the ancient Camino Real -- a path built centuries ago -- leading to the nearby town of Guane. We were so fortunate to have Alex as our guide, to walk the trail with us.Fluent in english, Spanish, and French, Alex, was a terrific guide! He was informative, and interesting and was very helpful as we made our way along the cobbled, often steep pathways. He lead us along the way, stopped and a local farmhouse, provided snacks and water, showed us details of Architecture in the town when we arrived, and introduced us to places were we could stop for lunch. He helped us find transport back to Barichara at the conclusion of our walk, and delivered us to our hotel. Alex helped make the experience So memorable for us. During inthe course of our day together, we learned that Alex was also an artist, and in the evening we met his friends, and visited his workshop and beautiful Art Gallery in the main square to see his beautiful sculptures. We loved his work, and my friend bought one of his pieces to bring back to the U.S. My friend and I agreed that Alex help make Barichara and the Camino Real a truly magical expreince.

You will need walking shoes. Take water with you for this 2 - 3 hour walk. Can buy some drinks and souvenirs close to the finish. We had a small/simple lunch at the end of our walk. Suggest to arrange for a car pick up, but seems to be a bus available or local taxi!

Make sure you wear good walking shoes and drink water, or try to do it early in the morning because it can get pretty hot and although it is mostly downhill, it does have a few uphill parts and the walking on rocks can be tiring and hurt your feet. (not hurt hurt but it does get tiring)And even though we did it while the weather was dry, there are places where you could trip or slip because of the rocks.Great walk, The scenery is really pretty - it takes 2 hours to go to Guane, although we did stop a few times for photos and just t o enjoy the view. Unless you are in really good shape and want to do the walk back, you probably want to take the bus back to Barichara, it is only USD$1 and leaves every 1.5 hours, take the 11am or the 12.30 one if you go in the morning. In our hotel we saw that you could take one "mototaxi" for about $18.000 back to Barichara, but we never arranged anything and did not see any vehicle around so we took the bus back.I saw some people who had prepaid the tickets in the bus station in Barichara, but it was not too crowded when we went (midweek) so if you go when it seem crowded find out about the prepaid tickets to make sure you get a spot.If you like to buy souvenirs and browse places, which I do, plan to spend at least one hour there.

it is the hike by excellence in this area. one starts on a pretty steep slope with treacherous looking rock slates, but one you are beyond this point, it is a leisurely "stroll" down to a charming town: Guane.

Make sure you wear good walking shoes when you go to do this rambling hike as the stones paving the trail can catch you off balance. The walk was mostly downhill with just some short uphill parts and is easily marked and follows old stone walls and crosses the main road a couple of times. The scenery of the mountains is pretty - it was quite green when we visited in May which according to one local isn't to norm for the rest of the year. We left Barichara as some dark clouds threatened the horizon, but made it to Guane in 2 hours (we stopped for breaks and photos quite a bit) without anything more than a few droplets of rain. There are some interesting fossils in the main plaza of Guane to check out while waiting for the bus back to Barichara which leaves around every 1.5 hours.
