Remote part of New Zealand with some spectacular scenery. Chose a day when it is not raining. Most of the road is sealed tarmac but there is a section of gravel.

I thought it was awesome. Dramatic interior scenery and great roads. Maybe not so great for the motion sickness prone, as the corners are really intense. We are glad we took this route. The traffic was really light. The only downside was a bad lunch at a historic pub, but i forget what it was called.

Great motorcycle road, lots of corners, beautiful terrain, remote country. Stop at the Whangamonoma Hotel for overnight, a beer, or eats. We drove all the way and also took the Golf cart adventure from Taranaki to Whangamonoma -- Best adventure ever. You self-drive your own golf cart - 20 some tunnels.

We drove the Forgotten Highway, it was a long day, but the scenery was fantastic. There is an option to use the golf carts on the old railway to explore sections of the Forgotten Highway, but we like to go under our own steam. The road passes through absoutely stunning scenery, native bush and historic settlements. Particularly striking is the hotel which can be found in the Republic of Whangamomona. Not all the road is sealed, about 16km is rough gravel but it is not too bad as long as you do not attempt to drive at speed. We left Stratford about 11am and reached Turangi about 5pm. It is impossible to keep on driving, you just have to stop and take in the wonderful, unspoilt views. I suspect this is not a route on which to take young children. You do, however, need a camera with plenty of battery life. Please note too that there are no fuel stops on the Forgotten Highway.

We struck a beautiful day. Not a cloud in the sky. I enjoyed the experience of driving our own cart in convoy. Morning coffee or tea and a crumpet was supplied along the track. Then a nice lunch at midday. We stopped at points of interest, and once in the inky blackness in one of the tunnels. Spooky! A trip not to be missed. Well done. We took the 20tunnel option. One negative - the toilets enroute are fairly basic

This is well worth doing if you have a bit of time. The most scenic part for me was the gorge section.

Scenery is amazing, plenty of great photo opportunities along the way. On bikes so there is about 9 kilometers of gravel, but we survived.

First, be warned ... this road, with its mountainous scenery and winding roads, takes far longer than you'd expect! I travelled westwards from Tongiriro, and had to stop overnight at Whangamomona! It is spectacular scenery - typical NZ narrow, winding roads through mountains and gorges. There are many opportunities for side trips. Get hold of a map or brochure so you know which ones appeal to you - unless you have a few days, you won't fit them all in; and some are quite a way off the main route. Most of the attractions are signed, and have display boards giving further information on history and geology. My favourites were Mt Dawson Falls and Tangarakau Gorge. It's a great choice of route between the coast and the mountains.

beautiful part of the country that showcases NZ geography and scenery. It's a long way out to Bridge to Somewhere, takes longer than the guide suggests but if you have the time I think worth it. the road is unsealed. The 12k unsealed on HW43 isn't difficult - but keep an eye out for motorbikes. the Historic Places notices inform the trip and the tunnels are fantastic - a tribute to those who lived in the area and to those who built them. make sure your camera is charged.
