Loved the lookout tower. Take a something bright red, humming birds will be swarming. If camping, keep an eye out for wildlife, saw eagles, wolf tracks and a minks. Be early for ferry return, return ferry was 1 hour early doesn't keep to the schedule.

A hidden gem just 20min by boat from Prince Rupert. Strolling through the village on the way to the trail head, we stopped and chatted with an elder. We traded salmon for Dutch cheese, and tasted some drying seaweed. Neat board walks and suspension bridges get us quickly into the coastal 2nd growth forest and over lush wetlands. The trail is quiet and rich with lazy frogs, pungent skunk cabbage, and moss laden hemlock trees. We ran our fingers over cedar bark stripped cedar trees and notched stumps from old growth logging. Victor the Metlakatla Park Ranger told stories and made sure we got out on time to catch the ferry back to town.

It's a really well maintained and marked trail, you're walking besides pristine beaches, and you're supporting a local business. Just do it!

Thank you for visiting us, and taking the time to provide some very thoughtful feedback. Our management team is currently taking the time to address some of your concerns regarding the trail - including having clearer signage at the top of the ferry dock. Your comments are highly valued, and we hope to see you again!Veronika Stewart, Metlakatla Wilderness Trail team(250) 628 3234 ext. 28 vstewart@metlakatla.ca "

A 20 minute ferry trip from Prince Rupert and you are thrown into a population of 75 people living in Metlakatla. Following the road you get to the beginning of the trail. The first 5 km are a nice, easy walk where you are crossing a little suspension bridge and later on another one to get to the look out tower where you watch the wild live from above. After 5 km it's getting more and more a wilderness trail to get to the next look out tower where we had to turn around to catch the ferry back to prince Rupert. We enjoyed the time on this just recently finished trail where they promised to do a lot more developing for the next season as well. They were considering a zip line. Be aware that there is a minimum of 2 people otherwise they won't let you go cause of the wildlife. Ask for the ferry schedule, there are different leaving times on schooldays and holidays. You get a hostel discount of 5 $ when you show the receipt, so it costs 20 $ + 6 $ for the ferry one way.

getting to the trail is an adventure, on the little ferry. the hike goes through some beautiful scenery. the bridges are great and the viewpoint is exciting. along the beach many bald eagles to be seen. the forest has a well laid trail. the beach is easily accessible for picnics on the huge tree trunks.

I took a friend & client from Scotland on this spectacular hike. She is far more into hiking than me and I was apprehensive as I was still recovering from an ankle fracture. The trails are very well constructed and the suspension bridges and viewing tower add to the adventure. It was easy to drop off the trail and beach comb. This a great hike for folks of all levels of experience. Take a packed lunch and don't take your dog (the bridges are not dog friendly). One comment is it is an 'out and back' hike rather than a circuit, but don't let that put you off, there's plenty of new things to see on the way back.

Greetings Mr. McDuff,Thank you for visiting the Metlakatla Wilderness Trail. We appreciate your constructive feedback and plan on addressing your comments for the 2013 season. We will have the campsite open in 2013. The canopy walkway and viewpoint towers have been strategically placed to provide both a scenic view and a forest canopy experience. Our objective in tower placement was to offer a vantage point that would not otherwise be available nestled in the treetops of the coastal rainforest. The continuation of the trail to LaxKwalaams (Port Simpson) is a frequently asked question. Unfortunately, this item is largely in the hands of our neighboring community and depends on thier development schedule.Again, thank you for visiting the Metlakatla Wilderness Trail and we appreciate your review. If you have any further comments or questions please feel free to contact us at trail@metlakatla.ca.Sincerely,Cory StephensMetlakatla Wilderness Trail(ph)250-624-5645(toll free)1-800-667-4393
