How many people would believe me if I were to tell them almost anyone can just drive onto an operating military base, walk around unobstructed, ask strange questions about weapons, vehicles and airplanes and take as many photos as they wanted all for free? It's not only legal but encouraged. A one hour drive from Canada's largest city (Toronto) is the largest Canadian Forces training base. It is between Alliston and Angus near the city of Barrie Ontario and called CFB Borden. It is open to the public and you are free to see most of the base including two golf courses and there are static displays of airplanes, armoured vehicles and artillery all over the property with plaques or signs for most displays. There is an indoor museum which has two main separated areas within the building: one is aircraft related the other is vehicle related. There is another room with an impressive display of military weapons. The items have been carefully restored and you can easily walk around and even touch most. The day I attended, there was a very friendly female Commissionare who greeted all who entered and I am sure she would answer questions. There is also a guide available for a small cost. Very well laid out and informative. Good lighting and easy to take photos. Check the limited hours before you arrive and arrive early enough to see all.Outside the building is Worthington Memorial Park built to honour Major-General Worthington who was the father of the Canadian Armoured Corps. There are many tanks and artillery pieces around the park. This is consecrated ground so please treat it respectfully and mind your children and pets.On my next visit, I have been told I must check out the Air Force Annex.
