The museum is very simple but ask a guide to walk you through the place and you will learn about how rich Butuan's history is and you'll find yourself eager to learn more. The discovery of balangay boats here show how the city played a central role in trade many years ago. Visit other places like the bonbon bequibel shell midden and the bood promontory to know more about their rich history

It was open but only a few pieces in display. It was already renovated pretty decently - close to what a museum is supposed to look like now. (Relieved!) I tried to read all those narrations in pictures to learn as much about Butuan. (According to Mario from Balangay Shrine Museum, there used to be more but since the museum is under renovation, you can only see less than before. There are 2 curators on site who can help guide but we knew this too late since we went here before Balangay Shrine. Should have asked the guard for this guide/s.). Worthy to go there to learn about rituals (like how they force-shape heads as early as baby years due to socioeconomic standing, rituals in building boats), proofs of how mature/structured their economic network was, how Butuan became Butuan geographically, and ....Lolong.Warning: Next is a bit morbid but it is what it is........ :(Lolong, world's largest crocodile, was cut into pieces to fit into 2 freezers :( Upto this date, it is still being disputed on what to do with him ever since his death last Feb 2013! Am so speechless with this :( The great one has now become a forgotten one. Really feel bad on how we treat things like this and hope there comes a resolution on what to do with him. Give him the appropriate respect.

Closed till December 2013 or January 2014. The only thing to see now will be the frozen remains of the largest crocodile in captivity whilst alive, Lolong. The annoying thing was that the tourism supervisor in the arrival area of Butuan airport did not advise me of this. In fact he told me to go to the Butuan National Museum before going to see other attractions.

the museum is a 5minute walk from the city hall of butuan city. it has a man-made lake infront of it and around it are trees, rattan, and assorted plants. upon entering the museum, one has to register. it is divided into two-wing area. in these areas, we can find the unearthed accessories, kitchen and dining items which reflects the history of trading in the early days.
