If you have the opportunity you should take in an opera/concert at the Opera house. It is a huge imposing building from the outside, but nice comfortable seating and good acoustics on the inside. Huge chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. I went two times and sat in different locations, but the sound was equally good from the high balcony area to the lower area seating. The performances are very good and one evening there was a world class flutist who performed with the symphony orchestra along with a soprano later in the performance. Excellent evening and the tickets are very cheap to see a great performance.

The performances are great, at par with other European performers especially the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra! Operas are shown regularly and I would not miss one show if I had the chance to.

World class architecture... I would recommend everyone to visit this fantastic opera theatre... can't belive it was designed almost 85 years ago...

The square in front of the opera, Independence Square, is nice to relax and enjoy the kids biking and running around. Bulletin boards on the NW side show times/dates for performances. The restaurants off the square are somewhat pricey.

As a new visitor to the city I find the Opera House a convenient point of reference whenever I take the taxi or when navigating the streets of Yerevan.I wanted to watch the traditional Armenian Dance Show but unfortunately, there was only ballet when I visited. Definitely an enriching cultural experience if you have the time to watch the shows.

It was a great treat to see the famous Anush -Armenian Opera after visiting Hovaness Toumanan's museum at the great Armenian Opera house! We even drive through Lori which was the setting for this opera. As an occasional opera buff, seeing an Armenian sung opera, understanding most of it, and seeing a stage of performers in Armenian costumes was simply amazing. The Armenian opera is one of the classiest opera houses I have seen, understated, amazing chandeliers, but not ridiculously opulent, just like its people!Anush opera cost us 6000 tram, about $18 (super cheap!). There are many open air cafés around the opera house, and people walking around all the time. The opera house area is the place to be!

I am an opera lover, retired professor of music and was disappointed that no performances were available during our stay. Wherever we travel a visit to the opera house is a must. Although our guide explained all to the guards we were denied an opportunity to take a quick inside view. Very disappointing and a first in all our travels.

in the middle of a picturesque city, the Opera grounds are surrounded by many lounge cafes, a small lake and lots of wifi places. You can have a seat while kids rent bikes, scooters, etc. vendors on the sides sell anything from local fruits and berries, to pop-corn and sunflower seeds. If it gets boring, the North Avenue with chic shops are 2 minutes walking, while the Republic Sq is 10 minutes away. Going opposite the Opera will lead you up towards the Cascade and luna parks of Mother Armenia.

I love this place because of its various schedules, besides Armenian national themed performances there are a lot of other international things. I have been to "Anush" opera by the most famous Soviet (armenian) composer - Aram Khachaturian; I have also been to the performance of national dance band *dont know how to translate the name, sorry*, which shows a lot of armenian folk dances with the national costumes. The building of Opera is designed very beautifully, which is especially noticeable at night when the illumination is turned on. Right next to the opera building there are a lot of different cafes, which usually offer international cuisines. I strongly recommend everyone to check put the schedule in opera while you are in Yerevan, you dont want to miss those shows!

I have attended a few different performances at the Yerevan Opera (one in 2009, one in 2014, and one other somewhere in between, I can't remember exactly when), and I am not sure how much I want to return. The quality of the entertainment is certainly excellent -- especially considering the low cost of tickets -- the performers always give it their very best. The ballet dancers and musicians are truly great. The theater itself is also lovely, despite its stoic exterior in comparison to opera houses of other major cities. But there seem to be no set standards or enforcement of audience behavior during shows. On every occasion, my party and I were disturbed by others around us -- people who brought small children that could not sit still through an entire performance, people who thought it was acceptable to talk above a whisper during the performance (and not just a comment here and there -- they were holding lengthy conversations), and people using cell phones. In my opinion, many audience members also dress too casually for evening performances -- lots of jeans, sneakers, trendy clothing, etc.Another thing that bothers me is the poor quality food and drinks available for purchase during intermission. Vending machine coffee and tea, candy bars and chips -- really? And if you want anything, there is no real line, you just push your way to the front like many other Soviet-style establishments in Yerevan.I am by no means a "snooty" theater-goer: I admit that during my first visit to the Opera, I brought my toddler along, wanting to expose him to a traditional Armenian folk music performance, and thinking he would enjoy the music, which he did. But when it became clear that he was tired of sitting in his seat (sometime after about 30 minutes), we left immediately so as to avoid ruining the experience for our neighbors. It is a shame that so many other patrons do not demonstrate a similar level of courtesy, and that the staff members seem to find all of this perfectly acceptable. As a result of these experiences, I recommend that culture-loving visitors take the time to enjoy a wonderful show at a low price, but do not expect high standards in terms of atmosphere or food.
