Trails very, very slippery. Tourist centre closed and dilapidated. Some good birds in the area. Find a stick to aid walking.

Having already been to many other Mayan sites, Aguateca did not have much reward at the end of a long journey by car, boat, and stairs, stairs, and more stairs! The stairs were in disrepair and somewhat dangerous. Not recommended for older folks :(

The natural defenses of this site are formidable. Once you get to the top, the views are awesome. This was only the third site to which I have been where round columns were used as part of the construction of one on the buildings.Walking along the causeway, I could almost imagine myself back in Mayan times. This is a very well preserves, if small, site. Well worth the couple hour boat ride to get here and back. And, there was no entrance fee when I was there.

We selected Aguateca rather tha Ceibal due to the moskito threat. The visit was an excelent experience. A 1.5 hour trip on the lagunes (each direction), on a nice day was enjoyable. The more you go into the lagunes the more birds , turtel , etc you can see. The site was interesting. The steleas are not original but they are very nice and impressing (less than Quirigua but more than Tikal). You need to climb from the river to the site. The climb is quite steep but not long. You walk i the rain forest and there are also some stairs. It is a recommended visit.

This site is located up on a hill and has the nicest structures of all of the sites in the Petexbatun Region. I definitely recommend visiting this site.

Aguateca, like Ceibal, is a site best visited by those with an interest in Mayan history. (We visited both on a two day trip from Flores staying overnight at the Chiminos Lodge.) We approached via an enjoyable, relaxing lancha trip. Situated on a cliff top overlooking the river we started our visit with a steep climb to the visitors center. We then walked the natural terrace following the cliff where there were traces of the foundations of residential buildings. We then hiked down into the deep, narrow ravine which bisects the site. It was quite chilly in the ravine (little sunlight) and the path was very uneven, muddy and steep. This path would be almost impossible had there been any rain. Having climbed out of the ravine which clearly provided a wonderful, natural defensive barrier, we visited to restored buildings - a royal palace and the barracks which protected it. These were sandwiched between the cliff and the ravine. We then crossed the ravine by a small bridge, which may have been natural, into a huge plaza with restored buildings on three sides one of which appears to have been under construction at the time of the city's collapse. There was an un-excavated structure on the fourth side of the plaza. Clearly when the site was occupied and the jungle cleared this city would have had a commanding view and control of the river and the Aguateca Lagoon. We had an excellent guide who definitely made the visit it a great deal more interesting than had we visited on our own.
