Unbelievable, truly lost for words. Pre book to avoid the queues and combine with the Vatican Museum.

We spent the day at the Vatican with a private tour guide. It happened to be the second anniversary of the election of Pope Francis and there was a ceremony going to be held in St. Peter's basilica. He prepared us for what we were going to see in the Sistine chapel and explained each of the frescos that were painted by Michaelangelo.Words and/or pictures do not do it justice. This is truly a sight to be seen in person. We stood in the chapel for some time just staring at he ceiling trying to take everything at once.Truly a memorable event.

A true place of wonder! Had a look on our Vatican tour, no speaking or photos allowed! But it's good to stand and take it all in! Truly stunning.

We rented an audio guide and appreciated the frescoes a lot morewhen we learned about the history and given descriptions. Disappointed that a lot of people simply did not have any respect for the place and still took photos and spoke loudly despite the warnings. The guards oftend shouted "shhhh" or "no photos please!",making the experience less solemn. After some time a priest went up to the altar, said a prayer and offered to give blessings to those who had special intentions.

Give yourself plenty of time to browse the corridors and rooms filled with beautiful artworks before reaching the grand finale the Sistine. Take a seat around the wall and lose yourself in Michelangelo's masterpiece.

The Sistine Chapel is one of the attraction on my schedule when I visit Rome. My expectation was rewarded for what I saw inside. The paints are beautifum, and you must find a place at the exit side of the room. From this position the people like to hang in the air, like a 3D effect. Beautiful work.

My only gripe now is that you can't see below the 5 foot line--where there is actually a lot to see. Make sure you have an audio guide for this room, because they yell at you....

This is one of the essential elements of any Vatican City visit. We bought our inclusive skip-the-line Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel tickets online at the official website and were so glad we did - the queues at even 09:30 were horrendous but we walked right past everyone and straight in - perfect! We made our way almost directly to the Sistine Chapel, found a seat (there are plenty around the outside walls) and sat silently listening to our audio guide (excellent free Rick Steve's app) as we gazed up at the incredible ceiling. Just brilliant.Quick tip - if you intend to go straight to St Paul's Basilica from here, a great shortcut is to go through the 'guided tour only' exit in the far right-hand back corner of the chapel ;-)
