I have seen this chapel so many times in films and documentaries. Nothing will prepare you for actually seeing it in person. So glad we came out of season. Can't imagine being such a small place with 100s of other people.Take your time to take in the contradictions you see in the paintings on the ceiling. The sybils on one side, saints on the other. It is well worth having a guide to explain all the hidden stories in the artistry. When we arrived at the Vatican we didn't expect to see such a huge queue in February. There are lots of companies offering queue jumping tickets with their tours..... save your money. Go straight to the information office on the left hand side of the square buy your tickets for the Vatican museum and sit in chapel here. They do a tour also. Once inside the siting there is a door at the bottom right of the room. This will lead you down to St Peters Basilica.

From the minute you walk in it's like there is this energy, this overwhelming about of emotions that come into play that words just cannot describe. I cannot tell you how amazing it was except by telling you that from walking in I commenced to cry for absolutely no reason. I left, and I just had this feeling to go back, so I turned back around and walked right back in. I'm stunning and just beyond anything you could ever dream of. To just be able to go there way such an amazing experience in itself. I'm glad I could live to say I went here. There is no additional charge to get inside, it is included with your admission ticket. I would def. plan on staying there for a good amount of time. Make sure you take your time!

Once you see the ceiling and the wall behind the altar, you'll understand why people have been marveling at the artwork since it first debuted. I could go on and on about the art, and you could look at photos from books (or travelers, who dared take a photo here, where it is FORBIDDEN and ENFORCED), but, nothing, and I mean nothing, prepares you when you walk in to the Sistine Chapel.I've been 3-4 times, and I've found that the best way to see it is to pay a little extra (one of the guided tours) that specifically allows entrance before The Vatican Museums open, or after they are closed. That way, you have the place to yourself and about 20 other people. Otherwise, it's packed to capacity, and you're so overwhelmed with people and the artwork, you probably won't get a chance to grab one of the few seats available on the benches along the wall, and you'll miss so much.

You can't visit Rome without visiting the Cappella Sistina. It's one of the most unforgettable painted chapel in the world. Where the Pope is elected. Is included in the Vatican Museum ticket (8€).

This should be the most beautiful place built by the human being. Miserere Mei Deus by Allegri was played during the Holly Week (Wed & Fri) in the Sistine Chapel, 13 candles lit representing Jesus and the apostles, the powerful effect of the music and the place was such that the Pope (Urbanus VIII) prohibited the representation in any other place but in the Sistine Chapel. You find yourself walking toward the place and then, after passing a door you see a huge room with a high ceiling. You recognize the paintings and then the wall behind you is The Last Judgement. It's such excitement that you only can turn yourself around trying to absorb in a glance all the place. You should be quiet and photos and video are prohibited. There are some seats along the walls where you can be there while admiring the place. The place is crowed so look for a place to seat to contemplate the paintings. One recommendation is to bring a book to guide you through the paintings, also doing a bit of reading ahead to catch the details.
