Lots of trees, well shaded campsites. Nice trails for mountain biking. Real quiet getaway. Very minimal boat traffic noise in the early morning.

We camped in the Equestrian campground. Very clean bath house. Grounds well taken care of. Employees were very helpful and kind. The only problem was the horse stalls. They were all dirty and had large puddles of water in them. The center in each stall needs to be built back up so the water will not stand. Other than that I will be visiting this park again.

I've been going the since I was a teenage (I'm in my 50's now) and I always look forward to my next visit. For years my large family would barbeque in one of the picnic shelters near the river and visit the pool. I started tent camping there in my twenties and it's was great. there a lot to see and a lot to do, and I don't think I could ever tire of it. The kids love it for the camping, fishing, hiking and of course, the pool.

We are frequent Virginia campers--camping about 5 or 6 times a year. This was our first visit to Staunton River State Park. And our last. The pool is without a question one of the best pools I've ever visited. Enormous. Clean. And perfect for all ages. It was the best part of our 3 day stay. The park itself is among the worst in Virginia. We camped and quickly discovered that the trash receptacles for the camp are in the middle of the campground. As a result, during the hot July visit we made, the camp smelled like rotting food. The camp bathhouse was dirty and in need of work. One of the men's unrinals was not working. The place also was desperate for a paint job.The camp sites are also very close together. Hard to get any privacy. We love to hike and the hiking was nearly impossible. We tried 4 different trails and they were all overgrown and filthy with trash. I doubt if the camp rangers ever bothered to check out the trails. Do yourself a favor and pass this place up.

Staunton River State Park is one of the six original state parks that opened in June 1936. It is located on 1,597 acres along the shoreline of the John H. Kerr Reservoir (also known as Buggs Island Lake), at the convergence of the Dan and Staunton rivers. The largest lake in Virginia is only one of the park's many attractions, which include a swimming pool, camping, cabins, picnic shelters and nature trails. In addition, the park recently opened an equestrian area with approximately 21 miles of trails.Cabin sizes range from one to two-bedrooms and there is one efficiency cabin. All cabins come fully furnished. No telephones or televisions. Pets are allowed in the cabins (pet fee does apply). The only thing that individuals need to bring are personal items and food. There is also a small gifts store in the park. The staff is friendly and willing to give needed help.It is a great place to take the family to relax.

This state park offers something for everyone. If your a family you can enjoy camping, swimming, play areas, fishing, or stay in one of the cabins. You can enjoy nature trails or just walk the roads at the park. You will see birds, deer, and occasionally you may see turkeys. You can even bring your boat and cruise the river. You will enjoy your stay and the beauty that is found at this park.

i love this park because the prices aren't bad except for the food. The pool needs to be expanded because when the summertime comes it be so packed!

The park is the usual lots of trees and a river Virginia state park but the swimming pool is very nice - absolutely huge and my grandkids, aged 2 to 10 really enjoyed it.

Compared to other Virginia state parks, this is the worst I have experienced for tent camping. The tent sites are very close to the RV sties. All of the sites are so close together that there is no privacy. The state parks website indicates that there are no waterfront sites, which is true. The river cannot even be seen from the campground since the view is blocked by thick trees and plants. There is no breeze in the campground, making it very oppressive on a hot summer night. In spite of applying tons of bug spray, my husband and I both ended up with huge numbers of mosquito bites! In addition to the mosquitos, the bees and ants were numerous and very annoying when we were trying to enjoy a meal at our campsite. As experienced tent campers, bugs and a few bites do not usually bother us, but this site was so bad that we were forced to leave and finish our camping weekend at a different park. There were some good points, though. The pool is very nice (it closes at 6 PM, though). The bathrooms and showers were very clean (they have electric fans in the bathrooms to keep the bugs out), and the staff was very friendly.
