I have visited the Greyhound Hall of Fame several times when there was a "greyhound gathering" in Abilene. It was fun, as we did the tourist thing, viewing the museum and greeting the resident greyhounds. This time was a visit as any other tourist, not with the group as in past years. The museum does emphasize the racing industry. The National Greyhound Association is located in Abilene, where all the stats are kept on any greyhound bred and registered in the US. What was fun was my greyhounds were with me, and visited the resident greys. For the fan of mid-century furniture, the lobby has an L-shaped arrangement of Knoll Wassily leather and chrome chairs. These are one of the iconic designs of the "modern" furniture. They've been there for years and have held up nicely. We even had breakfast on Sunday mornings with all the people and dogs in the group in an area in the back. A good time was indeed had by all. It's definitely worth the walk (or drive) across the street from the Eisenhower museum.

Being from an area known for horse racing, I understood the format of the museum. However, that said, a good portion of the place is geared toward the dog racing - regarding breeding, breeders, dog farms, and dog tracks. There is a section devoted to the of history of greyhounds, lots of pictures, artwork, and trophies. The big plus was the greeting at the door by Gary and Jade, two retired greyhounds. Upon entering and leaving we had pleasant, friendly, and informative conversation with the manager. After visiting the Eisenhower Museum, walk across the street and pay a visit to Gary and Jade, they love attention!

This is definitely geared toward the racing industry and all of the greyhounds featured were racers. There was a LOT of pedigree information, which was not of much interest to me. However, I did learn a few things, which made the stop worthwhile.

We walked in and instantly were greeted by 2 beautiful greyhounds! Gary and Jade were happy to have us there. The museum was very educational and afterwards, Gary, Jade and staff made us feel at home. What a neat place!!

Like in many towns, the employees here don't understand customer service. After driving 6 hours to reach, they insisted on closing the doors early. It was most unfortunate that this was to be the highlight of our time in Abilene. The decision to close early must have come from management as we were told, "You don't understand. If I stay, I won't get paid."If you try to come, be sure to be early. Customer service has left the building.

Who knew that greyhound racing was such a huge sport in the United States. This museum honors those gentle dogs who race for the first few years of their lives and then need loving homes. They are actually couch potatoes so they are prefect pets for the elderly and families with young children.

Have stopped by here a couple times and it is a great museum (and unbelievably free). There are a couple resident Greyhounds that you can pet after you take a walk through the museum. There is a lot of history and art related to the dogs, as well as the actual hall of fame. Even though I have no experience with Greyhound racing, it was great to walk through and admire this wonderful animals.

My mom and I stopped at the Greyhound Hall of Fame on our way to Colorado. We had read wonderful reviews and, as greyhound lovers, were looking forward to visiting. Unfortunately, a delay in my job and major construction on I-70 caused us to get to Abilene later than anticipated and we only had 20 minutes left to explore the museum before it closed. Having both worked retail, my mom and I don't like being "those people" who arrive right when an establishment is going to close, but since we had 20 minutes, we thought we could see some of the exhibits in the short time they were still open while not keeping them longer than 4:45. We opened the door and were greeted by two sweet pups immediately. The woman who sat at the front desk, however, was less welcoming. "We're closing," she said (twenty minutes early? Really?). We apologized profusely and asked if we could look around quickly, promising not to make her stay a moment later than 4:45. "Fine, but I don't have time to show you the movie and I've already turned some of the exhibits off and can't turn them back on." We apologized again, explaining we were coming from Kansas City and had hit construction on the way. Her response? "Well, I hope this isn't the only reason you came to Abilene."I would have understood her frustration if we'd shown up at 4:44 and expected her to turn everything back on and stay until we were done, but we were there 20 minutes before closing and told her we'd be quick. We left the museum BEFORE closing time, as promised, meaning the defensive reaction was unnecessary. The sad part is, the museum itself looks very informative, with some good exhibits. Unfortunately that was completely overshadowed by a freezing cold welcome. Closing half the exhibits twenty minutes early, locking up the dogs, and the rude reaction to our apology left a bitter taste in our mouth.

We actually got to pet a live greyhound! What a sweetie. It was interesting looking around the museum. Somewhat of a step back in time. Interesting .

The Hall of Fame provides not only the dogs that made a name for themselves. It gives the history of the line - where it came from, what breeds were mixed to obtain the dog we know today. I throroughly enjoyed the knowledge I obtained going through the museum. It truly takes a couple hours to see and hear all there. Best - they have some rescued greyhounds there to brighten yours and their day! Very friendly and knowledgeable people there.
