A stop at this charming church is part of our excursion to Montenegro. Fascinating legend about the place; good views from the island.

This church is set on a little island in the bay of Kotor. It can be reached within five minutes by boat from the town of Perast. The island is artificial, having been built by stones dropped over many decades by local fishermen, who believed in leaving stones as offerings to the Virgin Mary after a fisherman saw her appear there. The natural beauty of the bay makes this island very attractive both to view from the shore, to look around, and to look out from. The church is simple but fits in well with its setting. I didn't go inside but very much enjoyed the outside and its surroundings. There is not much to do on the island other than the church, although there is a small shop, so you do not need more than 15 minutes here. There are local men with boats who will take you across for a few euros and pick you up at an appointed time.

After hearing the mythical stories about the church and how it came to be, it was inspiring seeing it first hand. The church houses over 60 paintings by the Baroque artist Tripo Kokolja. If you're there at the right time, you might get caught up in local festivals celebrating the myths surrounding the church!

The weather was perfect when we took a boat ride through the Bay of Kotor to this small "island" where the church has been made. The story of its actual creation is incredible - as is the sight of the original Mary picture standing at the alter. A must see if going to Kotor.

A must see when in Kotor and Perast. A quick 10 minute ferry to this man-made island, to see a stunning church started in the late 1400's. The gifts left over the years to the church from regular people tell a whole story in itself. You do not want to miss this sight!

We visited here as part of a day excursion to ancient Montenegro. It is a short boat ride from the mainland, and is a fascinating place to visit. The guides are very helpful and the artefacts inside the church are quite something, including some needlework that took a lady 25 years to complete, and includes some of her actual hair in the tapestry. This was originally a small rock, and the rest of the island is man made. The alter is the only part of the church which is built on the natural rock, the reasoning being that if the rest of the island were to collapse through some natural disaster, the alter would remain.A fascinating visit, and one which you should certainly do.

This man made island off Perast is very much worth a visit with a guide to fill you in on the history of the island and it's buildings and art. Visited in late Oct so it was far from crowded and the weather was lovely. This whole bay is very beautiful and it is pleasant to take a boat from the island/church up the bay to Kotor.

Brilliant paintings on the walls and ceilings of the buildings and considering the troubles in the old Yugoslavia since the country split into different countries, it is amazing the much of the town has been either retained, or restored to make it such an attraction. For anybody travelling around the Eastern part of Europe, I think Kotor is a must visit location and the Lady of the rock church a must visit attraction

When we stopped to take a photo the rest of our tour group hopped on a boat and went to the Island without us(we think it was unintentional. ) By paying 5Euros each to another boat we did get there. There were a couple of bathrooms on the island & I decided to try to use one. There were lines & I asked someone if this was for the men's room. He responded that they were bisexual....I think he meant for use by both men and women. Arriving a bit late ,we missed most of the spiel given by a guide concerning the history of the church. We then hopped onto our proper boat(free this time) and returned to shore with our tour group. Like the T Shirt I saw said "mistakes make good stories'". This isn't an attraction that I would go much out of my way for,but I enjoyed the 30 second boat rides.
