Nothing to dislike, but if you like Victorian style it is a must to see. Beautiful place on a summer day

It's been some time since I visited Watts Chapel. It's the kind of place that if you go once, you go back with a friend to share it. Watts Chapel is a special place. If you are interested in Victorian history, if you are interested in the Arts and Crafts Movement, if you are interested in art and design in general, it is not to be missed. So much symbolism.

The Watts Chapel is tem minutes' walk away from Watts Gallery and is well worth the walk. It is extremely beautiful in an amazing graveyard with lovely views. There is also a cloister/columbarium with a lot of memorials that are very moving. The chapel is quite small and the whole visit takes under half an hour

This chapel was built in 1896/8 by the Watts family in response to the creation of a new cemetery by the local Compton Parish Council. Though designed in a Gothic Revival style, the essentially circular Chapel has aspirations towards a Roman Italianate or even Byzantine chapel externally. The latter especially when the shape of the building is considered, with its limbs of equal length forming a Greek cross. The real marvel is the interior, decorated by the local residents bursting with a fusion of Celtic, Art Nouveau, and Arts and Crafts references. GF Watts even contributed one of his own works, The All Pervading, to the altar, just months before his passing in 1904.Well worth a visit, and a walk up the hill through the cemetery to this intimate chapel.

It is a stunning building and interior set back from the road close to Watts Gallery. It's quite a steep climb up from the parking area by the side of the road. It's a real gem with artwork that is beautiful for such a small church. There is an information sheet or one can book a guided tour. The walk around the churchyard has spectacular views, but wear reasonably sturdy shoes as it's a bit uneven. Watts Gallery with it's artwork and tearooms are close by and also worth a visit. This is free!

Jaw droppingly gorgeous! This chapel is worth a visit on its own, but paired with the Watts Gallery is just a perfect day out. Our guide was really informative. I have marked facilities as being present as they are, but just down the road at the Watts Gallery.

There are not many beautiful places like this in the UK done in the Art Nouveau style. It was designed and built by Mary Fraser-Tytler (the ceramics wizard wife of G.F. Watts OM. R.A.) and the local people of Compton between 1896 and 1898. In those days the R.A was mostly men...........It's terracotta coloured outside but inside it is stunning. Best time to see this place is just after it has opened at 8am because if it's sunny the light in the chapel is amazing, it bounces around on all the gold relief angels. Also don't miss the unusual grave stones done in the same style in the cemetery They are well worth seeing.

A little gem of a cemetery chapel, designed by Mary Watts and made of local materials by local workers.

We stopped off here with the parents on a nice Sunday morning in Winter. Very pleasant and we had it all to ourselves. The intricacy of the design is awe inspiring and the laminated notes available inside were great at helping us understand the significance of each freise and carving.A must when you are in Surrey!

We visited the Watts Chapel after spending the morning at the nearby Watts Gallery. The Chapel is an Arts & Crafts marvel which was designed by Mary, wife of G F Watts, and is a beautiful, terracotta-clad interpretation of an Italianate Chapel - the interior decor is equally impressive and includes an altar painting which was painted shortly before the death of Watts. The cemetery embraces the hillside and contains many interesting graves and memorials as well as the unusual Cloisters building which sits above the chapel. A very moving yet beautiful spot and worthy of some of anyone's time.
