I thought it was expensive to get in, and it's quite dark in there and if it's full of people it's difficult to see. You need to know the back ground of the map which is quite small, and the history of the very old books cos otherwise it's just a smelly collection of tatty books!!

I was in the UK on business and had a meeting in Hereford. I wasn’t sure how long it would take me to get there so rather than be late I went there the night before and stayed in a local hotel. In the morning I had nothing to do so the hotel suggested I went to see the Mappa MundiI had never heard of it and had no idea what it was.WOW. Such a real historical piece, over 700 years old and there to be viewed by anyone was just amazing. I didn’t give myself enough time to really appreciate it but was very impressed with how such an important historical document is freely available to be seen by anyone interested. Whilst we have a lot of ancient structure in South East Asia we don’t have little detailed gems like the Mappa Mundi. I will go back if I ever have the chance.

To often we travel abroad and visit other countries and their cultures but often take for granted what is on our own door.

Liked the whole 'chained vibe' and the reverence the place is duly given. We kind of wondered into this, but glad we did. Learnt a lot and now appreciate non chained libraries.

Apparently I discovered this is closed for three week in January for it's annual restoration work. But I have been before and it's very fascinating, but I wouldn't want to rely on the old map for navigation though.

When you visit, make sure to spend lots of time viewing the supporting exhibition before you see the real thing - it will mean so much more. For obvious reasons, the light in the map room is kept quite low, but if you have spent time in the exhibition you will be able to read the map so much more easily. An ancient, fascinating and informative map which shows the world as it was interpreted back then. The chained library is great for anyone who enjoys books. Amazing to see these old volumes chained together in their original shelving. The volunteer guides are extremely helpful and informative.

The Mappa Mundi is a unique and fascinating document and well worth a special visit to see. However we were also very impressed with the supporting exhibition, which describes the context in a thoughtful and accessible way.

This is a fantastic piece of history to visit with all ages as well as absorbing the history of the Cathedral.

Fantastic. The whole story of how it was found, what each little figure means is amazing. The chained library is a masterpiece. The docents are happy to answer any question you have plus give you some great side stories. This is worth a visit again and again. Please see this wonder.

A unique way to get an insight into the medieval mind. The quirky world map with its mythical creatures and strangely shaped countries was just as fascinating as the chained library. the two volunteers on duty were a fountain of knowledge and engaged all the visitors in an informative discussion. Well worth the entrance fee!
