Did a day trip to this historic city. It is expensive to enter the cathedral, however, you can return within a year, which I think is a brilliant idea. The upkeep of historic buildings is expensive and I would prefer to pay a little extra to main this wonderful building. I couldn't stop looking up and around and spent a good hour inside exploring the amazing craftsmanship. My friend's children referred to as a "big house" and it is certainly that!!! Looking forward to returning again for another look around as your bound to find something new and will probably do a tour with one of the friendly guides. There is a good sized café nearby with bathroom facilities and a gift shop.

Staying near Winchester, we had to come and see the cathedral, couldn't have missed such an important historical monument. But the entrance fee was a bit of a shock, as there were 4 of us! The architecture and everything was absolutely brilliant, and the guides were very helpful.

You must visit the Cathedral if you're in Winchester. What an amazing building, lots of interesting architectural features which the guides explain as you wander around. The best bit was the Anthony Gormley sculpture in the Crypt. Wow.

This elegant cathedral is full of history, not the least of which is Jane Austen's gravestone which makes no mention of her being an author. But no fear, a brass plaque was added by a nephew mentioning it. This soaring English Gothic cathedral is beautiful to stand in. Whole sections of the transcept are still Norman and there is a small crypt with the original paintings that decorated the place before the cathedral had stained glassl. One of the most impressive things is the huge window at the back of the cathedral which was smashed by Cromwell during his occupation of the town. When he left the townspeople gathered up the shards and they put them all back to make a window. It is completely abstract and looks modern but it's all from the 16th century. Rent the audio tour or take one, it's worth it Winchester is a living cathedral not a museum. If you can stay for evensong it is really transcendentally beautiful. A boys and mens choir fills the space with beautiful music (and you get to sit in the carved choir stalls). Most days at 5:30. There's a charge to tour the cathedral but there is no admission charged for services.
