We visit only open air museum Jan Karlsgärden, but is really great.Free entry and free parking, also old post house is near.

We took the tour in English (there is a particular time for it). The old lady who did the tour was lovely and told a lot of interesting facts. However do not expect to see a lot of artefacts, as the castle was abandoned for some time before the restoration. There is a cafe nearby (couple of minutes walk) as well as open air museum. For the children there is a treasure hunt game in the castle. At the castle you can go at the top of the walls. At the ticket booth they have free WiFi.

We visited the Castle on Sunday, so there was no restaurant or evev a cafe nearby. The castle is repaired and there was a guided tour. Nearby there is a rural museum and an old jail (now museum). Worth visiting while in Åland.

This castlle like old building located very near main road inSund island Åland....beautifull landscape,small villages near by it and nice roads to drive slowly...same trip easy to visit Bomarsund ruins...i dont know exactly history about this buildind...sorry... but now its museum owned by Åland government and its one of the most rare building in this island.Castlle itself is small like house past time of wealthy farmer or land owner.

If you are looking for somewhere to look at an old castle and original traditional out buildings in the Aland Islands then this is well worth a visit. The display is all static but nevertheless interesting.The highlight is probably the associated restaurant "Jan Karlsgårdens Wärdshus". The chef Micke Björklund was named Chef of the Year in Sweden in 2000 and in Finland in 1997. The food is all prepared from scratch using local ingredients and is simple, plain but very very tasty.3 Stars for the Castle but 4 for the restaurant.

Very well looked after, and extremely interesting. The information provided was helpful in keeping our attention focused. Especially interesting area where Eric XIV was imprisoned, and later died. Very much well worth a visit.

Unfortunately Kastelholm was closed for midsummer, but we ended up to midsummer fest in Jan Karlsgard - outdoor museum next to Kastelholm. Lots of people and traditional treats and music and dancing around the majstång! Very nice experience. Outdoor museum has several old houses you can visit and see how life was many years ago. Tip for kids: Kastelholm castle has nice lambs around it, eating the grass. Wonderful to watch them! Beware the large snails around everywhere, so that you don't kill them by walking over..they seem to exist everywhere on the islands.

Kastelholm Castle was originally the hunting lodge of the Swedish crown. Take a look inside and see the dungeon where Erik XIV was poisoned by his brother Johan III.

This ancient castle is a great place to visit to learn about some of the history of the area. It has been well preserved, especially considering it is over 500 years old.
