One of many similar Monasteries. You can visit them during "Monastery Tours" widely sold in many Cities in North Romania (e.g. Suceava). The best way to do that is to rent a car and see them on your own. Why they are worth seeing?- amazing paintings, kind of an architectural signature of these small churches/monasteries. They are not big enough to hold the whole village inside so people outside are able to see paintings and be part of whole ceremony.- great gardens, very well organized, most of them are state of art when it comes to landscape architecture -some of the monasteries are selling their food products and offering rooms to spend a night, it is always unforgettable experience-you can see an orthodox monk and talk with them, they are usually quite well educated and know few languages- these are part of great Romanian Cultural Heritage and absolutely must see

One of the famous monasteries of Bucovina. While in the area, take some time for a leisure train ride with a steam powered locomotive, on a narrow railroad - it is called "Mocănița"

The monasteries in Bucovina are some of the most stunning places I have seen and a real gem. If you are lucky enough to come on a calm sunny day you will most likely have the place to your self or almost to yourself. The monastery is incredibly peaceful and the paintings are amazing (inside and outside). The same goes for most of the monasteries in Bucovina and apparently those in Neamt are incredible too but I didn't have the time to visit them.

When I was there, part of the paintings were in restauration. If you want to visit the museum you should ask the nuns to open it.

It is part of the Unesco heritage, and part of the chain of monasteries in Bucovina. It is very nice and peaceful.

Moldovita is one of the big 4 painted monasteries in Bucovina. It is the midpoint of a tour which should include Humor, Voronet and Sucevita. It seems quite isolated from the others, in a quiet valley surrounded by the lush green Carpathian hills. Entry is €1.50 and again, photography is another 1 or 2 euro on top of this. It was built in 1532 and paintings are predominantly yellow. There is an unusual triple arched open porch, which has helped to protect some of the frescos. The most important fresco is low down on the south wall. It shows the siege of Constantinople in 1453 but is actually a reference to an attack by Persians in 626. Look for the image of a walled city and people with turbans on. Inside the walls are covered in small square frescos one for each day of the year. They show the saint associated which each day.

I have been to many churches all over Europe, but this was a walk back in time to a Medieval era. A this is a must see! Well worth the trip across the mountains to see this living work of art.
