这里真是太令人吃惊了。如果你身在凯里风景环道附近,你不妨在此停留片刻。我独自在爱尔兰游玩了3个星期,期间都是乘公交。我一般是不选择这种方式的的,但这次我坚持以此方式继续前进。我为我自己那么做了感到很高兴。乘船去斯凯利格斯岛的一路风景的极度美丽,那里的修道院绝对是一个奇观。OPW公司在那里进行为期6个月的野营生活,你千万别错过和他们演讲。如果你要乘公交过去,去公交站会比较难,因为最近的公交站在凯尔西温,要在波特马吉乘船行驶24公里左右。我会凯尔西温时,很幸运的遇到了Ted Kennedy,他在瓦伦西亚附近经营出租巴士。他提供的服务是来回那里最便宜的方式,而且他是土生土长的瓦伦西亚岛民,所以他对着个地区很熟悉。他人很好,他带我去环炮台、老济贫院和一座废弃的古堡,因为我没有车,这些地方之前我都没去看过。我想说的是,如果你想要乘公交去斯凯利格?迈克尔岛的话,你可以发邮件给Ted。他可能会去凯尔西温公交站接你带你过去。他的网站是www.bennedysbus.com。总而言之,在爱尔兰待的这3周里,去斯凯利格?迈克尔岛是我最棒的经历。它正式成为我去的最远的一个地方。不要错过这里...你在这花的每一分钱都是值得的!!

能够去到斯凯利格?迈克尔岛进行此生难得的旅行,即使是花40欧元(360元人民币)也值。早前我读过基督教苦行僧对这儿的描述,这就大大地增加了我对这儿的向往。渔夫会载你到岛上,放心,这些渔夫都很可靠。到了岛上,你就会觉得那儿的景色真的独一无二,太炫目了。记得在提前在Portmaggee港口上做好预订,要不然的话你可能会像我们一样幸运,能在码头找到位置,否则就就只有期盼的份儿了。当地政府限制了每天的来岛人数,所以如果船都坐满了的话,那你真的就没办法了。

我们坐的是凯西船,通过我们波特马吉的旅馆预订的。老板说船又快又可靠,我们也同意。我们是早上10点上船的(40欧元(360元),在船上付现金),我们也属于第一次去小岛的人。整个行程大概要50分钟,在岛上可以待2.5个小时,仅仅够我们爬台阶、听解说、吃点零食和回船上。回程的时候船经过另一座斯凯利格岛,它是很多塘鹅的家园。我肯定其他人也注意到这点了,但差不多600步阶梯都是凹凸不平的,因为那是1000年前的僧侣安放上去的。山顶的建筑非常漂亮,还有一个解说员。他会简要的给我们介绍一下住在山上的僧侣的历史。小岛还是很多种鸟儿的家园,包括角嘴海雀(太开心了)。如果你坐船去小岛坐的是摩托化汽艇,真的可以好好的想一下,如果从爱尔兰海岸出发,划船前进,在世界的尽头会看到什么呢。我们住在附近的旅馆里(Reen 海岸旅馆),每个人25欧元(225元),还包含了丰盛的爱尔兰早餐,以及在渔夫俱乐部吃完饭(吃的是新鲜的鱼)。

Our trip to Skellig Michael was one of the biggest highlights of our honeymoon trip to Ireland. We booked our trip to the island with Brendon Casey. He was friendly and informative, telling us about the islands and the area on the way out and back. The island itself is AMAZING! It's one of those things you have to see in person. Pictures are astounding, but don't do it justice! Climbing the hand carved stairs, looking down from dizzying heights, walking in and out of the ancient beehive monasteries, hearing the stories of the guides at the top... it was almost unbelievable, like being in a dream! Driving the beautiful Ring of Kerry only makes it better!A few of small caveats...1) It's about a 45 minute boat ride each way and you spend 2 hours on the island, with no bathrooms. Be ready to go 4 - 5 hours without a bathroom. 2) Once you get out of the harbor, the sea can be VERY choppy. I'm not prone to motion sickness, but I was looking for Dramamine before we got to the island.3) This is physically intensive! We saw all kinds of people on the island, from children to the elderly. Most people can do it, just don't expect it to be a cakewalk.Don't let these things stop you. Just be ready!

Skellig Michael was, without a doubt, my favorite experience in Ireland. It isn't for the faint-hearted or those prone to sea-sickness. Adventurous spirits only. Lots of wonderful, old stone steps exposed to the heights. Breathtaking views and history. I only wish we could spend a whole night there to experience the full island. We took a boat from Ballinskelligs. Definitely not a luxury cruise and you need to be prepared to board a boat that's bouncing in the waves. The stairs might not be the place for unruly children...?

Skellig Michael was the main reason for me and my mother’s stay in Portmagee. The only way to visit the rock is by booking a boat trip. I booked our trip at 'Casey's boat trips', of which the costs regard €50 per person. Additionally, I had to ring during the evening prior to the trip to make sure whether the weather would be permitting. Note: if you want ensure a spot on the boat, you should book your excursion at least two days in advance (as it's quite popular among tourists).The boat left at 10 o'clock in the morning from the harbour of Portmagee. The trip to Skellig Michael took about 45 minutes. On the way we passed the alleged Little Skellig, home to a large bird colony. When arriving at Skellig Michael we first got a short introduction and safety instructions by the local ranger. Note: you are not allowed to enter the staircase prior to this explanation.Long story short: the stairway to the actual monastery is exceedingly long. It is NOT suited for people who have difficulty walking. It was without a doubt the steepest stairway I ever encountered. It took quite some time to reach the settlement (which consists of no more than eight ‘buildings’). Nonetheless, it was worth it. The monastery was established during the sixth century AD, and is currently one of two UNESCO WHS sites in the Republic of Ireland. Being up there really gives you an impression of the lifestyle of the early medieval monks. It must have been an awfully hard existence. The stay on Skellig Michael took about two and a half hours. Then there was the boat trip back to Portmagee, which took another 45 minutes. We arrived in the harbour around 3 o’clock. All in all, it was an exhausting but incredible experience.(Fun fact: Skellig Michael served as a filming location for Star Wars: The Force Awakens!)

Visiting Skellig Michael is one of those things you must try to do if you are in the southwest of Ireland. Getting there is quite difficult. The number of trips each day are limited to a small number of boats out of Portmagee and Ballinskelligs. The trips out of Portmagee are quicker and easier to arrange. The boat pilots out of Portmagee also have a better reputation than those out of Ballinskelligs. Your best bet is to arrange for reputable transport with your local innkeeper rather than attempting to arrange it yourself. Wear good shoes and bring wet weather gear. Also make sure to use the restroom before going out to the island as there are no facilities available on the island. The entire trip will take nearly 5 hours if not longer depending on sea conditions so try to go right before you head out. In Portmagee, there is a public restroom located just off the pier and it is easily the best public restroom in Ireland (it even has a plaque to prove this distinction). One can only assume the voters for this award are weary travelers returning from the Skelligs. Visiting Skellig Michael involves an hour long open-air boat trip across several miles of open ocean and then a fairly rugged climb up over 600 narrow, steep, wind-swept stairs cut into the granite of the island. This ascent is not for the faint of heart and it is important to respect the dangers of the climb. If you do not have a head for heights or you are not in good shape physically, you should not attempt the climb. If you do not have good footware, you should not attempt it either. There are no safety ropes or railings and a slip can mean death or serious injury quite easily. Once a top the mountain, you can explore the protected monastery that has been built into the side of the cliffs on a site that is quite protected from the strong winds you will experience everywhere else on the island. The monks chose well when they picked this location and it is quite tranquil compared to the rest of the area. It is best to save any photographs until you are on your descent so you can ensure you have enough time to make the ascent and fully explore the site itself. During the right time of the year, you will also see tens of thousands of puffins which nest on the island. On a sunny day, the views from the top are quite ridiculous and you will be simply amazed at the scenic beauty of this most isolated of spots.

I've read some negative reviews about Joe Roddy & Sons, but our experience with this company was outstanding! I researched and researched all the companies before deciding on Roddy & Sons and I'm so thankful that we chose them. We heard horror stories about other tour companies from multiple sources...several online reviews including tripadvisor, and first hand accounts from other people on the Island that didn't want to return on the tour that took them. We followed all the steps with confirming by emails, texts, and calls. We showed up about 30-40mns early and had no problems. Its unfortunate that others did have issues with this company, but they were awesome to us. I will say that as soon as we boarded they provide heavy duty wet gear/slickers to protect you, AND YOU WILL NEED IT! It can be very wet & dangerous. The captain really knew what he was doing. You are in a tiny boat, and the waves that come at you are way larger than the little boat you're in, but our captain handled the waves like a real pro! We were VERY thankful for him and his knowledge and experience. Another thing he did that we really liked besides getting us there with no problems was the disembarking off the boat onto the island. They dock by a set of tiny steps and the waves are nocking you around, but he doesn't let you take the step off the boat until he feels like its a good moment. He actually said you don't go when you feel ok to step you go when I say...which everyone got off & back on with no falling, but we did see people on other tours falling down getting off & on their boats. We really felt like our safety was # 1 to them. Once stepping off the boat and starting our adventure you take in all the beautiful scenery & wildlife. You walk up the ramp to the beginning point and you meet with a park ranger that goes over all the safety issues and warnings. They do thoroughly warn/scare you before you begin. The facts are that yes it is dangerous, but if you follow the rules, and TAKE YOUR TIME going up & down, and use common sense, you should be fine. I will say its hard going up because of gravity and your lifting your weight up a steep incline, but I had a harder time coming down. Going up your looking at the top, sky, and all the steps still to go, but going down although physically easier was tougher for me because your looking down at the rough water, how high you are, and how easy it could be to fall. They say many visitors go down on their butts on step at a time...I can understand why, but if you breathe and take your time you should be fine.This place is so magical, and steeped with history. The beehive huts are amazing. There is a lady ranger who lives up there most of the time and she gives you a background history lesson which was very interesting and informative. The huts, the settlement, the wildlife, the boat adventure, and the lifelong memories you will take away make this adventure a MUST for anyone lucky enough to go. Don't let your fear keep you from experiencing this magical Island. if you do you will regret it.
