I didn't know what to expect but found the place so interesting yet bizarre. There have even been sarcophygi (sorry about the spelling) in England. You can clearly see the carving marks left by the stonemasons. You are invited to try out a hole in the ground used to store grain (literally to climb inside it) and to top it all the information leaflet states to try out the stone sarcophagus for size! Needless to say we didn't try out either. No health and safety issues in France! All in all we enjoyed the experience which I think is quite unique. Well worth a visit. There are obviously quite dark areas of the tour and at one point there are cut out silhouettes of people which appear as you turn a corner into one of the cave areas.

It was an afternoon well spent for 6 euros. However beware of opening hours. There is only one or two guided tours per day, make sure you find out beforehand. Perhaps more in summer?!?This troglodyte has served its purpose throughout history. From the vikings invasions, sarcophagus that were massively carved at a rate of one every twelve hours. It was used during the wars, it was used as a cellar for wine etc. there are other points of interest in Doué la Fontaine, lots to see, worth seeing if you are a history buff.It is wheelchair accessible for most parts, although a little steep at the entry. Enjoy!

This place is unique in that it was a sarcophagus factory until the 8th century-- a different story than other troglodytes in the area. Our tour guide was a volunteer from the UK who had come over specifically to run English-speaking tours in exchange for room and board. I wish there were opportunities like that when I was young. Informative and interesting.

The site was very impressive and the guided tour was incredibly in-depth and informative. A great place to escape the midday heat and full of history.

This was very interesting and informative and the workings are quite shallow so you are not too far underground. We had excellent guides who were English students working for bed & board to improve their French.

Visite très interressante avec les commentaires du guide qui nous fait participer à toute cette histoire. On imagine très bien la vie d'avant. A fait en nocture avec les perrières à la lampe au carbure

Splendida gita pomeridiana in un luogo assolutamente suggestivo e ottimamente curato. Guida (e titolare) molto cortese e particolarmente bravo con l'italiano

Malgré le site fermer... Philippe a eu la gentillesse de nous ouvrir pour une visite des lieux très agréable

Encore un grand merci, de la part des sangliers, pour avoir ouvert le site alors que c'etait fermé. L'intro de la part du proprietaire, nous a mis l'eau a la bouche,et on na pas ėtė deçu, meme la visite sans guide dans les troglos en vaut le détour.
