It was a pure pleasure to wander through the old stones and learn about romain history. They do a wonderful job and we go back every year to see the progress.

The town of Vaison la Romaine has done a very good job of preserving its Roman history. The visitor strolls through the ruins of homes and commercial buildings. The well-preserved theater is still used today for an annual choral festival. The small museum is excellent; it has several very good statues, a lovely head of Venus, a beautiful floor mosaic, and interesting funeral monuments. It's a pleasure to sit in the grounds and imagine what life was like when people were wearing togas. The ancient Roman bridge in the town still crosses the narrow gorge, carrying traffic just as it did 2000 years ago.

We walk down the steep hill past the Roman villa. It is a huge excavation covering many acres. This was a very large Roman settlement and excavation is still in progress. It is beautifully maintained like every thing we visit in France. The most beautiful cats everywhere walking amongst the ruins sleeping on the marble in the sun. i think they must be strays and a kitten that looked just like a pure bred Himalayan peeked between the marble pillars at us. After the loss of our very elderly darling little cat 2 weeks before our trip my heart is torn worrying if any one cared about the delightful little creature, but i could not get close enough to even take a pic. They were all well fed and looked healthy and I saw feeding bowls under trees so someone must look was looking after them.

There are a lot of excavated ruins you can see and wander through. Recommend the audio guide that is available from the museum. The museum was very well done. There was a very informative film that alternated showing in French and English. The film is shown in a room near the back of the museum. I recommend seeing it before touring the ruins since it provides a lot of useful background info. Most of historically valuable items found during excavation are located in the museum, so don't miss this.

The Roman ruins are pretty amazing. They are spread out over two locations just adjacent to the shopping area in town. The Museum is very nicely done and there are multi-lingual headsets available to tour the Museum and the grounds. Make time to see this place.

This archeological site is basically right in the center of Vaison la Romaine, with much of the site still lying buried under the center of the city. There is a small but very interesting museum on one side of the main street. The theater is a fairly long walk through the woods behind the museum.

The Roman ruins have been excavated over the course of several centuries, but what you see is only a small area of the original town as most lies buried under the present day city. The museum is small but has the important finds and good explanations, if you read French. There is an audio guide available in multiple languages. There is an admission charge but once inside you can freely wander through the walls that mark the various structures and climb the steps of the theater should like to get some exercise.

This archaeological site sits right in the village and demonstrates the transition of cultural heritage as the populations changed and advanced from the Gallo-Roman times to Roman to beyond. Definitely worthwhile. Loved it. Well interpreted.

Our host informed us of a choir concert to be held in the Roman arena, there were up to 120 singers who entertained with songs by a french / Canadian singer Felix Leclerc.

Vaison has a rich history and the musee and ruins are a good place to explore. Good movie and displays in musee. Great Roman theater. Right in the middle of town (next to TI office and good, free parking lot).
