Even on a bright day this cathedral is rather glum. Needs a good clean and didn't look very loved when we visited at the end of december. perhaps it was the time of year. Worth a casual visit.

A beautiful building, but what an unusual history!St. Omer was a saint whose legend lives on within the building and the town.

From a photographic point of view the scale of the building and the dramatic light and dark inside provides a fascinating subject. The fact that as a cathedral it has been an intregal part of the areas history for hundreds of years can't be ignored and makes it a point of interest.On the other hand after a few minutes inside I really want to get out in the fresh air and it strikes me as paradoxical that this was, supposedly, built to promote the teachings of a man that was known for teaching in the fresh air under the bright Medittereanean sky so why are these buildings so dingy?It's got a very interesting clock inside though, which I'd like to know more about.

Visited this on our last day in the area. Several different styles of architecture in this building. We were lucky that a young lady was practising on the organ during our visit. Unfortunately the cathedral looks worse for wear and could do with some (expensive) renovation work. Well worth the visit.

It is 'billed' as one of the best examples of its kind outside of Paris. The cathedral is rather tucked away in the town but very much worth a visit. Inside seems far larger the you imagine and there are some very interesting elements to the building; architectural features, stained glass windows, statues and carvings. Great way to pass an hour.

The building is not particularly exciting but inside are a remarkable and enormous Rubens, and a saint's sarcophagus with children's shoes. I won' t say more - just go, find, look, and ponder.

I have visited Notre-Dame des Miracles cathedral on many occasions when we've been staying in the St Omer area. For a town only the size of St Omer, this cathedral is large and quite imposing, a spectacular example of Gothic architecture from the Middle Ages.The fabric of Notre-Dame-des-Miracles has survived 800 years of wars and revolutions. The first bishop of the region who was called Omer, built a chapel and college for monks on this site. This was rebuilt on a grand scale starting in the 13th century as one of the most beautiful Gothic churches in northern France. There are a number of interesting features to be seen in the cathedral, historical ones like the great doors used by King Louis 14th, the first time when he entered the cathedral, fresh from a great victory nearby in the war he was waging at the time and then again about three years later when he came accompanied by his wife and family in order to give thanks for that selfsame victory. Another point of interest is Saint Erkembode’s tomb. Erkembode was the 4th successor of Bishop Omer and his huge diocese stretched from Ypres (now in Belgium) to the River Somme. He walked it constantly, looking for land he could buy to give to the poor. He died in 723, crippled and almost paralysed. His grave was moved from the first church to a place alongside the altar in the new cathedral. On account of the fact that he walked such long distances to help other people, St. Erkembode is the patron saint of children who have difficulties in walking. Pilgrims came, and still come, to pray at his grave, and they leave old shoes as a symbol of their walk to ask for his help - the help of the man who walked so much for other people. The top of his tomb is almost invariably covered with little shoes, a reminder that Saint Erkembode is the patron saint of children who have problems walking.

Conveniently close to the City Centre, externally the Cathedral appears recently cleaned and restored to a good standard and, once inside, there is a very calming atmosphere, with soaring arches, an impressive organ, many side chapels; ornate carvings abound, with much marble decoration but all with an air of tranquillity and peace. Certainly worth an hour of your time, if visiting the city/surrounding area.

From the outside the Cathedral looks small, but inside it seems enormous. The organ is one of then most elaborately carved and largest I have ever seen and worth the visit just to seem it.
