The Chateau de Chantilly IS Chantilly! One of the few furnished chateau's in France after the war,,some of the rooms can't be visited anymore but still a great visit; plus the parcs & a ride in the hot air balloon( in summer). Don't forget to visit the Musee du Cheval aswell, spectacular!!

We were looking for a day trip within close proximity driving distance from Paris and settled upon a visit to the chateau in Chantilly. The outside of the chateau is beautiful, set on a lake with lovely architecture. It is "picture perfect". You can purchase a ticket to do a self-guided tour with an audioguide, or add on a guide for the private apartments (which we did not do). There is also a horse museum and show, which is located nearby on the grounds, and can be purchased separately, or as a combination ticket for a discount. You can also buy a ticket that includes the gardens, although they were not in bloom and the fountains would not be running during the time of our visit. Our visit was near the end of our trip and it was freezing cold outside (-2 degrees Celsius), so we opted to visit only the palace, as we were not interested in walking outdoors and did not have a lot of interest in the horse museum after reading reviews. The outside of the building looked beautiful, but neither of us is interested in equestrian history. The palace itself is beautiful both inside and out. The audioguide was helpful, as signs were only in French. Its last owner, Henri d'Orleans, was a collector of books and art, and had no heirs, so he left his collection to be opened as a museum and it is left essentially as it was when he passed away. Restoration was going on in a few places during our visit, but we were still able to see almost every room typically open for the tour. His collections are very impressive. I would recommend a visit to anyone who is interested in visiting a chateau or has an interest in art and would like to see it in a setting like this. Photos are allowed without a flash, and there were not many visitors, which made it a great time to visit. Allow 1-2 hours just for the visit to the chateau.

This is the home of a number of French paintings from the 15th and 16th centuries. The rooms are furnished and filled with all kinds of fun stuff to look at. The library is very impressive, as are the rooms. I would make a return visit. I would skip the equestrian stuff if that is not your interest. Parking is on sight, with plenty of room. This was a very nice chateau, one of my favorites.

When looking through manuscripts and paintings from 16th century France, i cannot feel admiration and at how things looked and were redesigned as this old castle complex was by the Montmorrency and Conde families, a short 25 kms from Paris The interior is stunning to the max, imposing in its grandeur and largeness, while outside the moat surrounding the chateau is now pushing up roses and other beautiful natural confections with gorgeous artificial lakes within the park. The chateau is unique for its art collection which hangs in galleries and features an extraordinary number of portraits. We loved the former library which is in mint condition containing original books, including Durer's Melancolia and the Book Of hours of the Duc de Berry. Chantilly is also famous for its race course and associated stud farm.

My husband and I toured the Chateau on a rainy day in July and thoroughly enjoyed it! The self-guided tour was easy with the headsets provided at the entrance so we could both go at our own pace. We loved learning about the history of the Chateau and area in general. Following our tour of the Chateau, we walked downtown for lunch then headed back over to the Museum of the Living Horse (a little less exciting in my opinion, but great for horse lovers), then followed that with a spectacular horse show. Great afternoon and absolutely perfect for a rainy day.
