We had planned to visit and were very disappointed to find that it was closed for renovation. There is very little publicity given to this fact. Probably very good but on this basis I have to give it the minimum rating necessary to ensure this posting is made

While the upper floors were closed for renovation, the ground floor did reveal many treasures, from the Roman, Pharaoh up to modern times, many paintings are worth several millions and are nicely. The Museum wasn’t crowded hence I could enjoy all pieces of art in tranquility, in particular the two Roman mosaic floors, I’ll return with a joy.

We had high expectations of this museum, described as the best in France after the Louvre. We spent an hour touring the first floor and saw some wonderful paintings. We also gained a good sense of the history of Besancon and the region over time from their fascinating archeological collection and we saw some interesting Egyptian pieces. The disappointment was that much of what we had hoped to see was not accessible; the second floor of this museum has been closed for the last few months and the whole museum will close for a major renovation for three years starting in March. The good news was that by chance, we visited on a Sunday, and admission was free. It's certainly still worth a visit but be forewarned that the collection is limited.

As we visited Besançon, the MoFA was partly under reshaping and only some of the paintings were on display. However some marvellous paintings such as, to start with, two wonderfull Bonnard or big size ans beautiful col ours showing Place de Clichy, three Interesting Cranach, an intriguing Giorgone, few Italian primitives and other paintings by Jordaens, Patinir, Courbet,Ingres and lesser known artists. Definitely worth a visite.
