Visiting this place was a last minute decision , we had read about it the day before and decided to visit as it was on the way to our final destination. We didn't book but did arrive 10 minutes after the afternoon opening and got a place on the guided tour ( in French) they do have English ones but not when we arrived. We were given some notes in English about each of the rooms. Mantin was a collector of the unusual and each room had it's own style and was filled with an eclectic mix of objects and furniture. What I liked most was the story of the house being locked up for 100 years before being opened to the public and we are/were among the few hundreds of people to see it since it was re- opened in 2010. If you have the opportunity go along you won't regret the time it takes to walk around and marvel at the unusual collection .

If you are visiting Burgundy, try to make time to visit this amazing house. It is attached to the museum and you need to book beforehand as you are only permitted to visit the house in the company of a guide. As other reviewers have already said Louis Mantin, whose house this was an avid 19th century collector whose house was closed up on his death in 1905 for 100 years. After considerable and painstaking restoration the house is a treasure trove of victorian (or the french equivalent term!) of engineering and architectural ingenuity. Our guide only spoke french but, even so, it was possible to understand the gist of much of what she said and if you are better organised than we were you can go round with an english speaking guide. Our tour lasted for nearly 2 hours as the guide clearly loved her subject and I would have loved to have stayed even longer as each room was fascinating.

If you want to visit the house of a wheathy man who lived 100 years ago, Maison Mantin is the perfect place. You will discover the 1st light bulbs and a number of information relating to the 19th century style and objects. The tour lasts 1h but it is recommended to make a reservation for the guided visit.

My husband and I contacted the staff at Maison Mantin to see how viable a day trip from Paris to Moulins would be, (when we were planning a stopover in Paris, from Melbourne). They could not have been more welcoming or helpful. We travelled from Paris by train, we were booked for the easily managed tour to fit in with the train schedule.....we managed to see a wonderful exhibit of ecclesiastical embroidery, showing at the time, enjoyed a fabulous lunch in the oldest cafe in the town, then arrived for our tour. They welcomed us so graciously and arranged a special English speaking tour guide, who was fabulous! It was so worthwhile from the embossed leather covering his bedroom walls, to the amazing towel heater in his bathroom, to the mistress' sexy boudoir, his fascinating collection of antiquities.........we couldn't have enjoyed it more....and to think it was all so well returned to its former glory! Having seen so many buildings belonging to Royalty, it was fascinating to see how a creative wealthy person of his era could create a beautiful yet unique home on a more, extravagant, but personal level!

This is a fascinating house which had been closed for nearly 100 years, and opened to the public about 2 years ago after substantial renovation. I first heard about it on a news item on bbc.co.uk. Surprsingly, very little is known about where and how the former owner obtained the many decorative objects in the house. The house can only be viewed on a guided visit (not sure if there are any in English) and must be booked - the groups are limited to 15-20 people. We managed to book on the day, despite going in August.Well worth making the effort to see this - you will not be disappointed.
