This was a very beautiful and big church. It was not overdone - and had some very pretty stained glass windows up high above the aisles. Also saw a newer stained glass window of Pope John Paul towards the front of the church.

Noto was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693 totally destroyed the city. Outstanding Baroque architects designed the buildings, including the cathedral. The Palazzo Ducezio, directly across from the cathedral now serves as the Town Hall.

When I entered this beautiful cathedral I was overwhelmed with the space and light and calm that filled the huge cathedral.I have seen many cathedrals and churches throughout Sicily and for me this is the most lovely of them all. It is by no means the most opulent, quite the opposite in fact but one can imagine inside this place that it was built not only to display power and wealth, the force behind most cathedrals, but also to provide a place of peace for prayer as well as the culmination of the creativity of an age. It is quite beautiful. There is less marble here than in most public Sicilian buildings and it is the better for it. It is painted a restful cream supported by creamy coloured limstone which complements those areas where marble has been used. The marble alters are allowed their moment of glory against this restful background and the alter pieces become much more a focus of glory.I returned several times during my days visit to Noto and if you are undecided whether to venture so far South and if you are slightly nauseated by the opulence on display in most cathedrals I can thoroughly recommend this one.My interest in such places is entirely non-religious, it is the architecture and art that interests me and I think this is a perfect example of architecture doing its job commendably well.Go there and visit lovely Modica while you are there.

Scrubbed-down Baroque interior--mostly white walls with beautifully colored medallions. Dome was replaced recently, but done in perfect harmony with the rest of the edifice. One of Noto's treasures.

This centrally placed cathedral has recently been restored following the collapse of the dome.as a result there are some modern stained glass windows and the decorations are fresh and clear.

We were group of friends, who went 10 days road trip through all Italy. This was one of our destination to see.... Too many tourists, especially Russians and French.... Go late evening if you want see beauty of Cathedral, otherwise skipped, if you dont have time....

It is such a thrill to visit a cathedral restored with such skill. Some might still pine the old and musty authentic Renaissance feeling, but I prefer the freshly defined curves, the human emotions and the floral touches of this Baroque masterpiece. A well written multi lingual audio companion would have been appreciated and could help pay for the upkeep. Just saying.

This is a fabulous building but they are repainting it inside....I didn't like the new paint job!! I think it is modernising an old building

OK. The whole city is a fascinating example of High Baroque but St Nick's cathedral is often pretty crowded with tour groups and school children. Either visit early morning or off peak or just try the outside and see what's happening...If there's nobody much around, then try inside. There's quite a bit to see and it's worth the visit if you're there in Noto anyway, but compared to other Sicilian sights it's not worth a specific detour! At least that's my humble opinion...
