Despite the site being 'in ruins', many buildings were in excellent condition, some standing several stories high. The mosaics in the bath house were really beautiful and in fantastic condition considering the age and turbulent history. The small museum held some lovely items, but no English signs as usual in Italy. The site held some real atmosphere and beauty. It's amazing to see the same building techniques being 2000 years ago and the worn ancient steps up to the basilica.It is situated in a picturesque and peaceful landscape full of wildlife.

After seeing many archaeological sites in several countries, the Greek city of Tyndaris (Tindari) is pretty average. Tyndaris was founded at the top of a prominent hill overlooking the ocean around 400 BC. The highlights are the original mosaics in the baths. The basilica has been rebuilt somewhat, the theater looks correct for its age, but for the most part, the city is in ruins. You are able to visual the size, streets and how everything was organized.Nearby is the church of the same name: Sanctuary of the Madonna di Tindari, also known as the Black Madonna (see my review of that attraction). It is very close and since you can visit both places in a short amount of time, I would recommend visiting Tindari.

Visited Tindari, not expecting much but when we arrived it was a great experience. Well priced attraction but very understated displays in the museum. A huge site facing the sea, it seemed as though most visitors stay at the top of the site and wander around the restored Roman architecture, baths with mosaics, and the amphitheatre. Go off the gravel path and you are free to wander around at leisure to see the remains of the settlement, uncannily treading on archaeology with every step - I picked up a couple of pieces of pot and a handle to an Amphora (placed them back where I found them though!).Not everyone's cup of tea, as there are few interpretive signs around, but peaceful and atmospheric.

First of all don't get caught out by the signs saying 'no entry' that guide you into the expensive car park. Keep driving up the hill. There is a second, cheaper, car park on the right under the olive trees but you can drive right up to the Church and park in the square. Good idea if you can't cope with a steep climb. The ruins are worth a look although could be a bit better maintained. Couple of nice places for a coffee up there and some touristy gift stalls. You can't beat the views.

The archeological site of Tindari is located on a promontory in the bay of the Tyrhenian sea between Milazzo and Gioiosa Marea. It covers the ruins of Tyndaris, a greek city founded in 396 BC by Dyonisius the Elder.Tyndaris was colonised by Rome in 254 BC and most of the actual vestiges date from the roman era.We scheduled a visit to the archeological site as it was mentioned in several guidebooks. Alas, it proved to be a terrible disappointment for the following reasons :First of all, there is very little to see. A little museum houses some inconspicuous artefacts found on site. Highlights of the walk are a small but rather well kept theatre, a monumental gateway and some mosaics in a bathing facility. Secondly, there is a lack of information. No guided tour, audioguide or guidebook are available. The information in the museum and the minimalistic panels along the walk are in italian only. Thirdly, the site clearly lacks maintenance. There is high grass everywhere and the walk is not clearly indicated. Fourthly, the much acclaimed view of the lagoon below the ancient city is blocked by fences, preventing you from approaching the edge of the promontory.In conclusion, don’t waste time or money here. The archeological site of Tindari is not even worth a stop when passing by.PS :Beware of Sicily ! It is an ideal location to practice water sports during high season, enjoy excellent food in a charming atmosphere and enroll for a few organized excursions with a local guide. It is however no country for individual cultural visit ! There are not that many highlights, opening times are liable to sudden changes and usually information is available only in Italian.

Il sito archeologico di Tindari sorge nell'omonima frazione del comune di Patti (prov. di Messina), ed è facilmente raggiungibile dall'autostrada Messina - Palermo: dall'uscita Falcone, se si proviene da Messina, dall'uscita Patti se si proviene da Palermo.L'antica città di Tindari, fu fondata dai siracusani all'inizio del IV sec. a.C., sul modello delle colonie greche mediterranee. Il nome derivò del leggendario re di Sparta Tindaro, il padre dei Dioscuri.Nei secoli successivi passò sotto il dominio dei Cartaginesi, poi dei Romani. In epoca imperiale la città conobbe un grande sviluppo economico ed artistico, testimoniato dagli scritti di Cicerone. Nell'alto medioevo Tindari decadde sempre più, sinché intorno al IX sec. fu distrutta dagli arabi e completamente abbandonata.In epoca moderna due campagne di scavi hanno portato alla luce considerevoli rovine risalenti all'epoca greco - romana, disposte in maniera regolare su diversi assi viari. Il maggiore tra questi (il decumano maximo) attraversava l'intero centro urbano, snodandosi tra una serie di grandi porticati sostenuti da archi a tutto sesto, ancor oggi ben visibili. Sono ben delineate anche alcune case romane a più piani (insule), con le botteghe che s'affacciano sul piano stradale. Una poderosa cinta muraria difendeva la città dagli attacchi esterni.Agli estremi opposti del sito sorgevano i due principali edifici: il teatro greco e l'acropoli. Il teatro, come tutti gli analoghi edifici di tipo greco, è addossato ad una collina naturale, con la cavea rivolta verso il mare. Questa disposizione permetteva agli spettatori di godere, oltre che dello spettacolo teatrale, anche di un paesaggio affascinante appena al di sopra della scena. Le modifiche apportate dai romani e le altre vicissitudini storiche non hanno alterato le parti fondamentali della struttura, ancor oggi in ottimo stato di conservazione.Dell'acropoli invece rimane ben poco, giacchè sopra le sue rovine, su un alto promontorio a picco sul mare, fu costruito l'attuale imponente Santuario della Madonna Nera.Il sito di Tindari è piuttosto ben conservato, ma poco pubblicizzato, al punto che molti turisti visitano il celebre Santuario senza nemmeno sapere dell'esistenza degli scavi. Consiglio vivamente di visitarli; con pochi euro è possibile fare un tuffo nell'epoca classica, passeggiare tra rovine illustri, godere di un incantevole panorama marino dall'alto del teatro ed infine fare foto veramente spettacolari (mi raccomando, quelle migliori si fanno al tramonto, poco prima dell'orario di chiusura!).

Il sito archeologico di Tindari andrebbe meglio sponsorizzato oltre che curato (pagando 4€ è più che lecito pretenderlo). Secondo me è una tappa culturale interessante tanto quanto il vicino santuario. Le rovine greco-romane e il teatro greco, grazie alla loro maestosa ubicazione, regalano un meraviglioso panorama sulle terre circostanti e fanno viaggiare con l'immaginazione sul glorioso passato che fu.

o impacto da historia do mundo nos deixa emocionados. O teatro (o que restou dele), ruínas pomposas, é tudo muito interessante de se ver. A vista é deslumbrante.

Come molte meraviglie siciliane, sono arrivata quasi per sbaglio presso questo Teatro Greco del Tindari con Sito Archeologico che ripropone le antiche organizzazioni cittadine e un piccolo museo. Meraviglioso. Da visitare. Ci sono sgravi e sconti per i grandicelli e gli studenti.
