This castle doesn't seem to get as much press as the other castles in Sicily but it is one of the coolest. It's in great shape and is so unique. When my wife heard how long it was going to take us to drive to the castle from Piazza Armerina (where we were staying), she had her doubts but as soon as she saw it, she turned to me and said that it was well worth the drive. Have some good shoes, though because the castle is built into stone and that stone is the floor in several locations! If there was only one castle I could see again in Sicily, this would be the one.

In many of the ruined castles around Sicily you have to work hard to imagine what it was like centuries ago. But there is enough still standing (or restored) in this castle to give you a real idea of what it was like back in medieval times. And the views from this top of the rock castle are outstanding. Get there in the morning if you can or mid-afternoon as it is closed from 1pm to 2pm. You pretty much have to walk up the hill to get to it as there is very limited parking space near the entry. And note that the castle is in Sperlinga, not Nicosia.

Don't miss this incredible ruined castle set high above the glorious surrounding countryside. Views are to die for! Be careful of your footing though - not for the elderly or faint-hearted!

Il luogo dove sorge è fantastico, sulle rocce di Sperlinga , piccolo paese alle porte di Nicosia e per la strada che porta a Gangi. Peccato che non è molto curato.

Dopo la visita al bellissimo borgo di Sperlinga siamo saliti per poter visitare il Castello ma aimee chiuso perché momentaneamente non in sicurezza. Castello medioevale in parte scavato nella roccia e in parte costruito addirittura sulla stessa roccia si presume nel 1080, donato al Comune nel 1973. All'interno, nella grotta più grande, un'anziana lavora su 2 telai a mano (molto antichi) confezionando variopinti tappeti che vende. Uno di questi telai, momentaneamente é stato portato in una grotta in paese e la signora continua il suo lavoro trattenendo i turisti. Per produrre tappeti utilizza stoffe molto colorate ricavate da maglioni dismessi.

Castello particolarissimo, infatti è gran parte scavato nella roccia. La struttura è ben conservata e sovrasta un piccolissimo paesino vicino Nicosia

Die Burg thront wuchtig ueber dem Dorf Sperlinga. Der Felsen ist durchzogen von Hoehlen, von denen viele als Lagerplaetze und auch Wohnungen dienten. Einige dieser Hoehlenwohnungen sind heute noch bewohnt.Die Besichtigung der Burg ist ein Muss fuer Mittelalter-Fans. Der Name Sperlinga hat uebrigens nichts mit dem gleichnamigen Vogel zu tun, sondern kommt von dem Wort "spelonca", was wiederum nichts mit Spelunken gemein hat, sondern schlicht und einfach Hoehle bedeutet. Sperlinga ist bekannt als der einzige Zufluchtsort der Franzosen waehrend der Sizilianischen Vesper.

Ieri ho potuto visitare finalmente il Castello di Sperlinga, una meraviglia risalente addirittura al 1500 a.c. Sono rimasta piacevolmente sorpresa dalla simpatia e cordialità degli abitanti del luogo che lavorano a stretto contatto con i turisti offrendo addirittura un servizio di guida. Infatti la ragazza che ci ha accompagnato, oltre ad essere simpatica, era molto preparata e ha spiegato molti aspetti sia del tipo di roccia arenaria sia della storia e delle leggende legate al Castello, ai francesi e ai Vespri.Se andate vi consiglio di chiedere di parlare in dialetto, uno dei più particolari che abbia mai sentito legato infatti al galloitalico, molto diverso dal resto della Sicilia.

Bel castello scavato nella roccia unico nel suo genere, bellissimo paesaggio circostante. il castello e tenuto in buone condizioni ha un bel parco all interno visitatelo ne vale la pena, nota molto positiva i prezzi modici per l'ingresso. bella esperienza!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
