We drove to the fortress of San Leo from the direction of Urbino. As you approach from this direction the fortress looks like something out of a fantasy: there is a high vertical cliff atop which stand the walls of the fortress. You have to drive up through a medieval village. Currently there is no path to drive up to the fortress. You have to park in the village and walk up a short but very steep path which switches back and forth a few times.The fortress was first built by the Romans, and has had a turbulent history since then. In the middle ages it gained a reputation as a prison, following the imprisonment and subsequent death of Count Cagliostro: accused of being a freemason and an alchemist, and almost certainly being involved with the affair of the diamond necklace of Marie Antoinette. Later it also served as a prison for Felice Orsino, a leader of the Italian Carbonari who tried to assassinate Napoleon III. These prison cells form part of the current museum.The fortress consists of the high tower of the keep and various later additions which contain three courtyards. Each of them gives a spectacular view over the beautiful rolling countryside which surrounds the high rock. Two of these courtyards have a view of the high city of San Marino.The village contains at least two old churches. One of these has a basement which dates from the third century. The village was visited by Dante and Francis of Assissi, who preached in a house abutting the piazza (identified by a plaque). The piazza is a quiet place where you can spend a nice sunny afternoon sipping a crudino con prosecco. There are a couple of nice bakeries. All told, it is a nice place to spend half a day.

We have visited this nice castle in a half day trip from Rimini , we have rented a car, very useful to visit such places as SANTARCANGELO, GRADARA, SAN MARINO and SAN LEO.2 hours is enough for this visit, very nice and you can visit it almost by yourself, it is not touristic.RECOMMENDED!!!

This is a great castle to visit just outside of Rimini. You can drive out and back in an afternoon. Beautiful views and interesting history.

The small castle in middleage is very beautyfull. it's still perfect constructure with the round shape of the castle.The castle(Rocca) is located on the top of the clif so can defend themself as well.

Sono stata oggi a San Leo, molto carino e suggestivo il borgo, la Fortezza (o rocca o castello) merita la visita a pagamento (con tessera Coop Adriatica 6,00 invece che 8,00 euro) con all'interno una sala con arnesi da tortura impressionanti e la prigione dove morì Cagliostro. Visita da ripetere con la bella stagione, oggi era molto ventilato.

Nonostante la nebbia che impediva di cogliere la bellezza principe di questo luogo e cioè la posizione predominante sulla valle sottostante è stata una visita interessante e suggestiva soprattutto per l'imponenza della fortezza.C'è una raccolta di armi degli inizi del 900 , un'esposizione di belle foto del luogo intorno agli anni 30 interessante. .Molto particolare l'atmosfera che si respira nella cella del conte di Cagliostro..c'è ancora chi deposita fiori freschi sul suo giaciglio.Il museo a lui dedicato e ai suoi rapporti con la massoneria,mi ha invece detto poco.Per arrivarci si sale a piedi,dal centro dell'incantevole piccolo borgo per un sentiero un po' ripido,ma abbastanza breve

Senza averlo come meta prefissata abbiamo scoperto questo luogo incantato dove pace storia e ambiente convivono regalando serenità.Con piacere le tre Chiese del paese erano tutte aperte e visitabili. Arrivando da est non si vede nulla fino all'ultima curva dove appare la fortezza lasciando a bocca aperta.Che dire! Assolutamente da visitare.

Dette er et flott sted og litt av en befestning oppe på en topp som man ser langt borte fra. Vil man vekk fra alle turistene i san marino så ta en liten kjøretur videre så er man der. Besøk denne perlen av en småby med dette svære fortet med fantastisk utsikt helt oppe på toppen.
