At Castello di Scipione I found a corner of peace and real fun, the perfect match for my curious, gipsy soul in its turning 30s. Long-time history meets preserved nature in this secretly-held structure that is slowly being disclosed to the public with a didactic, cultural spirit and hospitality within the structure, which is among the oldest of the 22 affiliated to the local association of castles, and at the same time the one that's being opened lately to the public by a young couple with a very discreet approach. The castle itself, a jewel of immediate beauty, with influences from the Middle ages, passing through astonishing frescos, from the architectural details of the wooden ceilings from the 17th Century, up to the Russian style table setting (including a memorable dedicated didactic tour), discloses a hidden world: from the beautiful terrace, where you can dream of the overlapping of past and present, culture and nature, to the very respectful interiors. Passing through ages from one room to another, you just breathe the air of delicate yet decise renovations. The whole concept aims at preserving a building of overlapping history, while offering the chance of discovering Italian beauty in a cosy environment. It is a good occasion for a romantic getaway, a meditative stay or just a funny moment out of the ordinary paths. If you stay for a long week-end, you can easily access some of the simplest pleasures of an enchanting region. Horseriding in the countryside is strongly suggested in my personal opinion and worth a try to see what still remains of the agricultural tradition, and to fill your eyes with the beautiful countryside views; otherwise, if you need to recover from a stressful week, treat yourself with massages at the beautiful Art Deco Thermae in Salsomaggiore (eclectic influences in an astonishing building whose perfect recovery is almost moving to tears), hopefully after enjoying the decise taste of the local cuisine: almost whenever you stop, tastes still taste here! Make sure to take you time to savour and to watch: if you are a patient observer, you'll see any kind of animals near the castle, which is a proof that noise and pollution has not reached this enchanting corner yet. If you come alone, or bring your children, lovers or friends with you, you'll feel how reconnecting with the past is often a solution to look at the future in a positive way. Only minus, the mobile and internet connection is not always easily accessible. But this is not always too bad: in a 24/24, 7/7 connected world, you might need to have a good excuse to turn your BBs and Iphones off for a while and get back to real life.
