We came across the Santuario di Oropa while staying in Sordevolo, while it is a touristy attraction, it really is worth the visit, especially at twilight, when you are all the way up and coming down the stairs watching the sun set.

Worth the effort to visit. Sanctuary sits at the top of a hill, at the culmination of many, many steps. Particularly impressive in the fog.

When travelling from Italy to France, we decided to spend a day just north of the motorway near the little town of Biella. We drove to the top of the mountain to the site of the finish of one of the stages of the Giro d'italia this year. It was astonishing to see this enormous building appear from the mist as we approached the summit. It used to be a monastery, built in the 12th century, and then added to ore subsequent centuries, until it now is the largest European sanctuary, providing accommodation for pilgrims, with over 350 beds, and two beautiful chapels where Mass is celebrated several times per day. The setting is wonderful, the buildings majestic, and the sense of peace surrounding it all palpable. Not to be missed if you pass by this part of Italy. There is also a great museum, including a Gallery of memorabilia describing the life of the local community over many generations.

Visitied S.d. O in august 2014.was a great way to spend the day. drove from biella a 15 min car ride. Then we saw the Santuario and then took the tram further up the mountain.great to feel the cold air and listen to the quiet feeling of the nature. Will go back if i go to Piedmote in the future.

The sense of history, the location and the opportunity to sight see and hike. The drive up to the Santuario was a challenge but the views on the return trip made it worthwhile.

Huge, beautiful sanctuary. Lots of very pleasant short and long walks in the surrounding mountains. Highly recommended!

Questo Santuario dedicato alla Madonna Nera si trova ad una bella altezza in montagna, il suo comprensorio imponente domina su tutta la valle biellese... incredibile vista con la neve... la fede poi fa tutto il resto e con i colori e odori ti trasporta in un viaggio indimenticabile

Dio si incontra spesso in montagna. Ma svoltare dopo l'ultima curva che non può non ricordare uno dei più bei successi di Pantani... e trovarsi davanti questa immensa costruzione, che sembra quasi più un castello reale che un luogo di culto, è inaspettatamente emozionante. Ci capito in una giornata dedicata al "BIT del turismo religioso", ottimo spunto per arricchire il carnet delle mete vicine a casa e forse poco conosciute. Poi basta lasciare l'auto e camminare: la funivia per il lago Mucrone, dove trovo addirittura dei piccoli iceberg... le chiese, antica e nuova, il cimitero monumentale, il Sacro Monte. Un paese. L'emozione più grande però è quando i turisti se ne vanno, restano solo poche persone, e ci fermiamo a cena e a dormire proprio nei locali del santuario. Un tuffo nel passato: mi rimane impressa la biancheria di lino un po' consumata, rammendata finemente, con ricamate a punto croce in rosso le insegne del santuario, immagino suore e ragazze del paese che cuciono per imparare, come si usava una volta. Il torrente sotto le massicce mura porta rumore di pioggia, ed è l'unica colonna sonora di questo luogo che a raccontarlo si fatica a crederci.

Uno dei più bei santuari alpini d' Europa . luogo di culto venerato con pellegrinaggi numerosi e da tutte le parti . i parcheggi sono gratuiti; da visitare le due basiliche particolarmente quella vecchia.Intorno vi sono vari ristoranti che propongono i loro menù: piatto cult la polenta concia e i formaggi di Oropa.
