Vittorio Sella is midway from Cogne to the worst col of AV2 and a good starting point for the climb to 3300 meters. It is austere, two long buildings and a separate cafe and restaurant. I have only stopped there as we started from Valnontey (a mistake for which we paid dearly) but as places go, this is great and looked very nice with smallish rooms and very clean. It stays open late in the season (end of September) and if you come from the west, it is the ideal stop. And coming from east, it is the best starting point for next day's torments...

Refugio Sella is about 5 km from the trailhead in Valnontey with an altitude gain of about 1000 meters, set if a lovely cirque of snow and glacier covered peaks. The weather was wet and cool the day we visited and, as a result, it was just us and the manager, her mother in law and daughter in the refugio that day. We stopped for a about 45 minutes for lunch and a chat, delivered some mail that the manager's father-in-law asked us to deliver to his wife, and headed back. The restaurant was cozy and comfortable and the food very good. The hike is quite nice and follows a rapidly flowing stream most of the way, passes through a number of interesting ruins and presents the opportunity to see a good deal of wildlife. The round trip is a good workout and took us about 4.5 hours including lunch. I would expect the trail to be quite crowded during peak season, but we were there only a few days prior to their closing for the winter and except for a couple of parties near the bottom of the trail, we saw no other hikers. Very well worth the effort, even on a rainy day.

We arrived early in the season, before the crowds. We had one of the best minestroni I ever had. The people were friendly and helpful. You can get to it in several ways, but the shortest is the direct trail from Valnontey. If you go from Cogne or the end of the Valnontey Valley, you better be in good shape and prepared for a long long hike. The area is gorgeous. Stay there overnight and come back through the Herbetet (or something like that) trail.

We hiked up out of season - June - which was relatively quiet - apparently August is hellishly busy. The refugio managers are wonderful, funny and generous people, who fed and watered three tired souls with lashing of steaming hot deer stew and ice cold beer. After a quick snifter of the local grappa we headed to bed. The rooms are small, very basic but comfortable. No showers but they do have toilets, sinks and hot water. Coffee is good too. I'd return for the food alone and the chance to see some of the local wildlife. Tip to new walkers - stick to the marked paths and don't pick any flowers. One ranger pointed out that the ubiquitous purple alpine flowers can incur a 600 euro fine if they catch you with one! The Gran Paradiso park is magic though - listen out for the sound of Marmots whistling your arrival as you hike up. If you see any ibex, count yourself lucky.

A spectacular Alpine hike is even better with lunch, beer, and friendly faces at the top. You can stay overnight and proceed to the next rifugio, and the next...

Stayed one night. Arrived shortly after lunch, brought our own and relaxed for a bit. Then headed out to Colle della Rossa and saw lots of ipex on the way which was fun, they let you get quite close which made for nice pictures. The rifugio had a bar and a restaurant. Food was excellent and plenty to go around. Staff was friendly. We happened to get our own room, but there were beds for 8 in each room. Dinner, lodging, and breakfast ran around 50 euro each.

Un rifugio, è un rifugio.Non è un hotel ne a due ne tantomeno a quattro stelle.Impagabile la camminata, grazie alla quale si può essere davvero a contatto con la natura, piante e soprattutto animali in quantità notevole.... NOn ci siamo fermati a dormire, ma spuntino e cappuccino direi niente male. Forse più comprensibili i prezzi qui, dove il disagio per il,trasporto merci non è' per nulla lieve, che una lattina di coca cola a tre euro in un bar di un centro città!!

Il nostro trek in Val d'Aosta comincia da questo rifugio. Saliamo con i mezzi fino all'attacco in Valnontey. Il borgo è molto caratteristica. Si sale per circa due ore o poco più fino a raggiungere il rifugio. Molto grande con più edifici. Dormiamo in uno e mangiamo in altro. Cena al secondo turno intorno alle 21.00!!! Non ho mai mangiato così male in un rifugio. Si mangia comunque perchè l'indomani si cammina. La posizione del rifugio è molto bella uno spiazzo ci ha permesso di fare yoga attendendo la tarda cena. Alla sera si vedono gli stambecchi. Il resto lascia molto, molto a desiderare.

Andare al Rifugio Sella è sicuramente un'esperienza da non perdere. Potete salire direttamente da Cogne..oppure fare il giro da Valnontey, proseguendo per i casolari dell'Herbetet e arrivando quindi al rifugio, di modo da vedere gran parte del Parco. Al mattino si può proseguire fino alle vette più alte..è davvero semplice anche per i meno esperti arrivare ad alte quote con semplici sentieri!Gli scenari e gli scorci sono unici..per non parlare del fatto che il più delle volte vicino al rifugio stesso è possibile ammirare stambecchi camosci e marmotte. Il rifugio durante l'anno offre varie manifestazioni e sagre. Il personale è molto gentile..la cucina da rifugio..e dopo una gran camminata si mangia sempre di tutto!!

Eravamo venuti per una giornata,ora si torna per vedere gli stambecchi,e ci si ferma 3 giorni.primo giorno salita e giro al lago del Lauson, a circa 2800 metri di altitudine una francese fa il bagnocamosci in quantità. Alla sera pernottamento al rifugio.Al mattino si va a vedere gli stambecchi,tanti, tranquilli. marmotte, ancora camosci. Altro pernottamento, successivamente giornata di ritorno.
