Galatina is a little town about 20 km from Lecce mostly known for a military airport and Air Force training school.The old Basilica is dated back to 1300 and it is really well worth a visit for the beautiful frescos when you are in Salento. Guided visits in Italian and English are available free of charge. The frescos are in part inspired by Giotto's sequences of paintings in Assisi S. Francesco Cathedral.

Tucked away from the main square area, don't be put off by the rather plain exterior, the inside is stunning.The frescoes are magnificent and it was interesting to see the work in progress ones giving an insight into the restoration process

The frescoes and paintings in this church made our detour to Galatina well worth while. I am so glad I didn't miss the experience of visiting this church. Hundreds of vibrant medieval frescoes fill the walls and ceiling and surround you as you walk around the large church. Several paintings from the Giotto school make the experience of visiting this church even more wonderful.

Fascinating church heavily decorated as the internal walls were covered in frescoes. It was very striking - almost like a tattoed church! We drove to Galatina specifically to see this and were not disappointed.

This church was unusual in that the internal walls were covered in frescoes. It was very striking - interesting to try to work out what the frescoes are all about. If you're in Galatina well worth a visit as is a stroll around the adjacent convent.

If you are in Salento you HAVE TO SEE IT! Just amazing! You will be impressed! This is the southern version of the Assisi basilica.

we have been there while they were organizing a marriage and a violinist was playing.Unbelievable the atmosphere.Unbelievable even to look at paintings (like GIOTTO for period and location) in Puglia.. Marvelous.

This heavily frescoed church is definitely worth a visit. I enjoyed the adjacent cloister even more.

De moeite waard om deze Dom te bekijken. Hartverscheurende taferelen geschildert in de hele kerk. Of je ervan houdt of niet, wel doen!
