Anagni is called the Citta da Papi because 5 Papa's (popes} came from this village. There is a beautiful Crypt in the Cathedral, the church itself is also beautiful but to get a guide to let you know dates and what everything meant is really cool, this area is called Ciociaria, a cluster of Medivale Benedictine villages with beautiful natural areas such as a famous Grotto of Pastena and a real cool palace called Caprarola home of the Faranese Palazzo if you like history this was amazing, FYI this was in Central Italy between Roma and Napoli near the Abbruzo National Park. Stunning villages that cling to the mountains. This was a 4 day tour from Tema Viaggi

Agagni is a name one learns at school by being slapped. in this case it was a special slap to the face of a pope. Its an old story but it reflected the independent nature of the local hereabouts. The origins of the city are also the stuff of legend, a pure magnet-draw for my femme and i. the town overlooks the river valley and from afar does not betray its medieval roots or historical origin from a distant the town appears to be a stand of great building nestled around a hill. It was only when we penetrated the town, that its noble palazzos were revealed with lots of monuments for the casual and serious historic buffs. But it is the crypt of San Magno that had us enthralled, with its cycle of frescoes going back to the 3rd century, bearing witness to the passage from the Byzantine to the Romanesque. To shake-off the proverbial travel dust, we took a excursion to the public thermal springs a few kms outside Anagni in an old village surrounded by beautiful parkland. the fame of these curative waters are well noted, especially the mineral waters of Fiuggi, said to aid the healing of kidney diseases. For us it was the healing of tiredness and overexposure to the gems found in town. There is another pleasure in town and that is the particular Panforte or Panpepate, a sweetbread based on candied fruit and honey with layers of chocolate, oven-baked , after which it is cut into thin slices and served with a glass of local vino. Our accommodation was handsomely furnished by Villa la Floridiana on the Via casilina, surrounded by a park and furnished in excellent taste. The food was superb as well. In another visit we will book a room at the Grand Hotel Palazzo della Fonte , a sumptuous art deco building. Eateries that we enjoyed for local fare ( is there any other?) were Schiaffo, not far from the cathedral and the Torre Al centro Storico in the village of Fiuggi.

Thanks for your enthusiastic remark. It is possible to book a foreign guide by calling or sending an e-mail few days before the visit.

fantastic well worth a visit this beautifully preserved 13c crypt in the cathedral of Anagni....city of Popes...........home of the papal seat before it was Avignon. Not just the crypt but also the magnificent floor of the cathedral is not to be missed

The crypt with its early 13th century frescoes and Cosmatesque floor is one of the most beautiful in Italy. However, visits are restricted to only fifteen minutes, at which point the lights go off!In order to get the most out of these delightful and incredibly well-preserved frescoes, I strongly recommend buying the guide from the bookshop. The cathedral opens each day at 9.00 and closes at 13.00. It reopens again for three hours in the afternoon (October-March: 15.00-18.00, April-September: 16.00-19.00).

An amazing and fairly complete set of well-preserved medieval frescoes. Well worth the trip.

Between Rome and Naples 20 minutes from the autostrada. We parked the car near to where we first saw the entry arch to the city and walked about a half mile through the ancient towntoward the Cathedral. NOTE LUNCH CLOSURE. Have lunch at Lo Shiaffo near Cathedral. The Crypt was likely visited by Michelangelo as he planned the Sistene. A guide takes you through (no flash photos) the gide was speaking Italian but we got the drift. The frescoes speak for themselves. Extremely evocative. Their condition is stunning. The history of the Popes, the Insult and the town are all important but the art in this Crypt is more revealing of the times that the stories can tell.
