When I first walked in and was greeted by rooms of model train displays, I was a bit disappointed. However, the didn't last long when I discovered you could walk out the back door.The museum is in an old train depot, and when you get out on the platform you are greeted by a few tracks full of old trains. Locomotives, passenger cars, flatbeds, cabooses. You have free reign to wander all around the tracks and check out all of the train cars at your own pace, which was pretty fantastic. Unfortunately there are no signs or indications of what you're actually looking at, but that certainly doesn't detract from the magic of the railroad.

Trieste has an interesting and rich rail history with links having been built according to the country that controlled the city: Austria, Yugoslavia or Italy. The geography of mountains in the hinterland has complicated things further. This museum has an impressive array of displays including several working model railways in the old station buildings. The artefacts range from electrical control gear of the unique Italian 3-phase system to uniform caps; from signals to tickets.Outside it is a different matter with several fine old locomotives in a very sad state of repair. The station is next to the harbour and sea air plus unprotected steel = corrosion. The museum is only open about 3 days a week and is entirely run and financed by volunteers. Don't expect to see many English captions or hear English explanations. For rail fans, this is worthwhile place to visit. For the general visitor, especialy if non-Italian speaking, it will probably not appeal so much.

The museum is in a former terminal railway station at the Southern end of the harbour. It is very interesting for rail enthusiasts, but possibly less so for the casual visitor. It is enthusiast run and was only open on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday mornings 9-1 when we visited in September 2013. Admission was 5 euros and we spent about an hour and a half there. The museum is in two parts. Outside is a large collection of steam, diesel and electric trains, along with some tramcars. The majority of these are in an unrestored state and whilst interesting to see, it will be a long time - if ever, before they are going to be back in working condition.Inside the spacious rooms of the old station building there are many well presented displays. There are a number of model rail and tramway layouts and dioramas - so many it was difficult to appreciate them properly in the time available. There are displays of old photos, signalling equipment, uniforms, signage and other railwayana. If you like trains this is a worthwhile, visit which you should include on your visit to Trieste.

Brilliantly laid out and so much to see both inside the station and out on the platforms. Particularly delightful are the many diaramas and model railway layouts. The detail on the tiny figures is staggering. Check out the modelling of the figures building the Opicina tramway, particularly the group of men raising one of the poles into place. And someone has a great sense of humour. In one of the main foyer displays, try to find the nudist female camper and the man having a pee beside the road! These little touches made our day.When I suggested to my wife a visit to a railway museum, she groaned and was inwardly dreading it, hoping to be able to drag me away after 30 minutes. Nearly 2 hours later we left only because it was coming up to closing time. My only suggestion to improve the experience would be to provide some translation of the more important exhibits. But overall very highly recommended. God bless the many volunteers who work on the exhibits - a real labour of love, and it shows.

A circa 10 minuti a piedi da Piazza dell'Unita'd'Italia lungo le Rive,si giunge al museo ferroviario.Molto interessante,sia per grandi che per i piu' piccini,in quanto raccoglie una serie diesposizioni di locomotori antichi con la cornice della vecchia stazione.Un viaggio nel passato interessante.

Solito museo ferroviario con esposizioni già viste. Niente di nuovo. Locomotori poco interessanti. Il contesto logistico non rende.

Non me ne intendo di treni, pero' tutto cio che e' meccanico mi affascina molto, per grandi e piccini, curiosi ed annoiati, questo posto vi fara' scoprire un mondo che prima ignoravate o non conoscevate!

E' stata la più bella sorpresa estiva nella visita di Trieste. E' uno spazio gestito da volontari e per questo segue orari poco agevoli. Prima di riuscire a visitarlo ci avevamo già provato un paio di volte. E' allestito in una vecchia stazione ferroviaria rimasta ancora nella struttura originaria di inizio secolo: semplicemente meraviglioso. I plastici sono belli (i miei bimbi sono impazziti) ma sono interessantissimi tutti i pezzi assolutamente originali (dagli arredi delle sale d'attesa fino alla più piccola manopola o ai berretti). Alcuni pezzi sono delle chicche. Bellissima la mostra dei treni sulle rotaie esterne. Alcuni erano aperti e li abbiamo visitati. Un tuffo nel mio passato da studente. Bellissimo ed affascinante. Un complimento all'associazione di VOLONTARI che lo gestisce (in barba ai baracconi dei musei cittadini traboccanti di personale nullafacente e poco disposto verso il visitatore, uno stipendificio che urla vergogna di fronte a queste persone animate da tanto amore). Ringraziamo la cortesia di chi ci ha accolto ed è stato tanto prodigo di spiegazioni. Ci abbiamo passato alcune ore con i bambini impazziti a seguire i trenini e poi a bocca aperta seduti sulle panchine nel salone principale (tutto originale) a sentire le spiegazioni. Grazie per l'accoglienza e nuovamente complimenti. Meriterebbero qualche finanziamento in più, più spazi e sicuramente molta ma molta più attenzione dalle autorità locali. Unica pecca gli orari di apertura ed il sito internet un po' naia (ma ci hanno spiegato autorealizzato).
